The Children of Huang Shi; hopes, fears, future
I just watched “The Children of Huang Shi,†it was a good movie.
I caught the movie in the middle, it rarely happen for me not to go through all the channels to get to decide what to watch, but the first phrase captured me, Gorge was talking about his parents and how pacifist they are, how all his life he believed in the same approach and now, he has doubts;
“You see, my family are pacifists... My mother had Gandhi to tea. And my father, went to jail during the last War. He's the bravest man I know. And now I think they're wrong. I think there are times one must fight.â€
No surprise that all these reminded me of “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Fight Testâ€:
“I thought I was smart / I thought I was right/
I thought it better not to fight / I thought there was a Virtue in always being cool/
so when it came time to fight/ I thought I'll just step aside and
that time would prove you wrong/ and that you would be the fool/â€
For me, who had always believed in peace while living in dictated country, thinking of a new approach is scary too. I get the contradictory between, the need to choose the right path and the bitterness of thinking you’re on the wrong one.
Beside this dialog, the movie was fine, it’s based on a true story and it touches you, but still the story could be told better. Some characters are unfinished for instance Ms. Wang, an important character whose gift to Hogg inspires the whole trip. We don’t know that much about her, she is just this merchant who has feelings for Hogg and help him to get through his way. I still believe it’s a good story, but you owe it to a good story to tell it good, thinking of what he did, what men can do, make me like this movie. Hogg rescue children, who are symbols of life, laughter and future, he keeps me hopeful.

Despite some clunky dialog, so-so acting with little chemistry between the characters, and a predictable plot, this docudrama, about a Brit in China during the build-up to WWII who leads 60 Chinese orphans ona 500-mile march to escape marauding Japanese troops, still manages to be affecting. The story is based on a real event (although I'd bet that the ex-patriate nurse who provides tepid romantic interest is a cinematic invention). The DVD includes a 12-minute "making of" that's quite interesting.
