This movie is a gem. Sweet, smart and funny with all the action and drama touch points you want in a con/heist film. If it were not for the slow spots 1/2 way through the movie it'd be perfect. Beautifully shot, brilliantly lit and superbly acted (you can tell the actors had great fun making this movie) it is a story about the Brothers Bloom -- con men since birth.
From here on out its a con within a con. Just when you think you have it figured out the director pulls back the curtain to show how you have been played. You are played just like, Penelope, the mark in the movie. Or have you? Telling you anymore would spoil the film.
Its one of those movies that play out brilliantly on DVD since there are details and dialogue you want to hear/see a second time just to make sure you understood the author's intentions. Great performances are turned in by all the major actors but, Rinko Kikuchi steals the movie. This is remarkable since she only has one line of dialog and its only two words long. Everything else she does with body language and hilarious expressions.
The movie carves out a place of its own in this genre right next to the Sting, Paper Moon, the Hustler, the Grifters, House of Games, Match Stick Men and the Thomas Crowne Affair though its a lot funnier than the movies listed. This one is a keeper.
MY INTERPRETATION of the 5 STAR MOVIE RATINGS:
0 STARS: Horrible. A waste of your time.
1 STARS: Below Average. Borderline Dud.
2 STARS: Average. Niche Audience Appeal.
3 STARS: Satisfying. An Enjoyable Movie.
4 STARS: Well Done. Theater-worthy.
5 STARS: Outstanding. Worth Owning.

Quirky con game movie. Too quirky. We meet two brothers who, after a series of short cons, eventually attempt a long con on a "ravishing" beauty inexplicably played by Rachel Weisz. (BEGIN RANT. Now, Miss Weisz is a good looking woman and a fine actress but she always seems to be miscast as an exotic. "The Constant Gardner" also cast her as that rare breed of woman that makes men loco, jump off cliffs and get into duels and whatnot and I just don't see it. She's pretty but.. END RANT) In any case, it's fussily directed and told like a fairy tale. Movie nerds might like this- it has a lot of highly composed camera setups- but it's probably too twee for con-game genre fans. It was for me.

A disarming and nonchalant movie that has a whimsical tone despite the complications and disappointment that always lurks beneath the surface. Told with considerable not-in-your face comedy and humor in describing two brother's vagabondage from foster home to foster home, until as adults they become semi-unwilling partners in crime---the crimes of hoodwinking. The writer-director has taken the idea that an older brother will tell a willing younger brother what to do and think to a ridiculous extreme: the older one "writes" the arcs on big con jobs that the younger one then enacts, such as falling in love or pretending to fall in love with a rich woman. At first I thought this rather improbable, but these two brothers were all each other had in a chaotic world of growing up, so their ambivalently sticking together, even if increasingly dysfunctionally, does make sense, as does their wandering as it takes on an international scale. It is colorful and as I said, marked with a little bit of sweetness or odd comedy (cats on crutches)---actors Brody, Weisz, and Coltrane succeed very well in this aspect---and I found the whole thing quietly (mostly) very entertaining. If you don't know Brody well, he is very good, and fans of his quirky, slightly sad manner will find him in good form here. 3.8 stars. 2.10

awesome!
Rachel Weisz at the absolute top of her game. She has jumped way up on my list of actors. Stunning performance: I'm also a huge Mark Ruffalo fan. He did great as did Adrian Brody.

Rachel Weisz is the main reason to see this amusing but somewhat half-baked con man story. She steals the show as a beautiful and eccentric heiress (is there any other kind?) who gets taken for a ride in every sense by a pair of globe-trotting grifters. But as far as cinematic con artists go, Mark Ruffalo and Adrien Brody, as the titular characters, simply can't measure up to the charisma of Newman and Redford. And on what planet could these guys be considered brothers anyway? The most interesting thing about these two, aside from their mute, bomb-loving Japanese sidekick, is their inexplicably quirky penchant for dressing like the Brothers Blues. Seriously, it's 2008, guys, what's with the black suits and hats? Are you TRYING to look like con men? The inevitable twist ending is a bit of a let down too, mainly for being needlessly complicated, just like the rest of the plot. To be fair though, by now it's got to be tough coming up with truly clever and original endings to these kinds of stories. And what this film lacks in cleverness, it at least tries to make up for in humor, interesting locales, and a wacky turn from its leading lady.
