Set during World War II, the film tells the story of Bruno, an eight-year-old boy who is the son of an SS officer. Bruno befriends Schmuel, a Jewish boy who lives on the other side of the fence near Bruno's house. You don't really need to watch the movie to figure out what happens.
This film is not a tragedy. It might play out like a tragedy, but the ending does not provide any sense of release. I need to quote Briony Tallis' (from Atonement) here: "But what sense of hope or satisfaction could a reader derive from an ending like that?" None. Bruno and Schmuel were innocent children. I'm forced to ask: Who is the film trying to punish? Bruno's parents for participating in the Holocaust? The audience, i.e the rest of the world who sat idly by and did nothing for allowing this to happen? I don't know.
The movie is a black and white snapshot of someones suffering. You know it happened. You know there is nothing we can do to change it. You wonder --for what purpose is it preserved in such an inanimate state where it is completely irrelevant? The movie does not raise any questions. It just hits you in the face and leaves you shocked for a little while. If you want an amazing Holocaust film, see Spielberg's Schindler's List instead.

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS:. An upper class boy befriends a Jewish boy on the other side of a concentration camp wire. They are both 8 years old. The Jewish boy cannot understand why he is in the camp and why he is being treated so badly. The upper class boy cannot understand the concept of a work camp and why Jews are there and being treated different, he thinks it is a farm. So one day the Jewish boy says he is sad because his Father has gone missing, so his friend decides he is going to tunnel under the wire and help his Jewish friend find his Father. The upper class boy is the son of the camp Commander. He is successful in getting into the camp, and that is all I can tell you. This is a suspenseful drama with a fantastic cast. What I can tell you is, there is a Gut Wrenching ending that will stick with you long after the credits have rolled. Vera Farmiga plays the mother of the Camp Commanders son, and she is excellent. Well acted, directed and photographed. The movie earns 5*****STARS.

Not what id call an emotional movie
Being myself jewish and having seen a lot of movies about WWII and the holocaust in particular, i have to say this movie represents what i dislike most about this type of movies. I understand completely the need to represent all the horrors of war on film, to be brutal at some points and face the truth in the eyes, but sometimes thats not enough to make for a good movie. Movies are first and foremost a visual media, they can show the world in a completely new light, and they can bring a lot of sentiment and understanding where it is most hard to grasp or come by. The director of this movie seemed to ignore that quality completely, instead going for a sort of bleakness that is devastating combined with the subject matter. If you're looking for a quick emotional fix to remind you of your humanity, i assume thats a good thing, but its unlikely it will lead to any deeper understanding of how banal evil can be. Personally at the end of the movie i felt the obligation other than the need to cry, and i can hardly say i feel changed in any way because of it. All in all, to me the movie is really disappointing seeing as the it was made from the point of view of the other, more human side of the nazi regime, a concept i was really interested in.

Probably the 2 best performances in this film are from Asa Butterfield (Bruno) and Vera Farmiga (The mom). Asa is like a foreign Haley Joel Osment, and Vera is stunning in the end, you really belive that she's going through the turmoil presented (Not to give to much away)
It's more than a dramatic period piece, it's a WWII classic for the ages. The ending is probably one of the most powerful ever recorded on film.
All in all, this is a great film not for everyone, but for those who's heartstrings can handle such a tugging.
