The plot device is interesting but the story itself falls flat.
The premise is interesting but I found my attention waning almost immediately after the couple made a decision. There was just /too much/ happening afterward, issue after issue that kept cropping up and I couldn't care about each mini climax.

The premise is interesting but I found my attention waning almost immediately after the couple made a decision. There was just /too much/ happening afterward, issue after issue that kept cropping up and I couldn't care about each mini climax.
... plus the resolution was rather cheesy and better done in a much more famous film. Not to mention the seething undertone of misogyny but was almost certainly in the source material if I know the author at all. Still, movie, you could have toned that down.

Not so good
I loved Donnie Darko and I loved Southland Tales (yes I truly did, and still do). But The Box turned out disappointing.
It's not a bad movie, but it could have been so much better. That may not be fair criticism but once you'r halfway the movie it...

I loved Donnie Darko and I loved Southland Tales (yes I truly did, and still do). But The Box turned out disappointing.
It's not a bad movie, but it could have been so much better. That may not be fair criticism but once you'r halfway the movie it stops being interesting.

superman!!!!
This was a decent movie! I think there was a twilight episode on this kinda thing... turning it into a movie didnt pan out too well in my opinion... But still a crazy concept...

Okay this movie is FAR from perfect and the first half is MUCH better than the second half (Richard Kelly spends so much time in the first half of the film setting a strange and ominous tone somewhere between Kubrick and Lynch, then suddenly there's a scene with a bunch of pure explication that kind of ruins it) but there are more great ideas in this failure than in a lot of less talented director's successes... After Southland Tales I was afraid Kelly would never make another film...(I was equally afraid that he WOULD) Now I'm glad he has and I hope his next film reaches or exceeds the promise of Donny Darko... this is a step in the right direction... there could be a masterpiece in him yet.

The concept is fascinating but once again Richard Kelly seems to be doing a film for himself. While this was a little better than Southland Tales, I'm getting the feeling that Donnie Darko was a one-time fluke. See this if you must but you will be shaking your head at the end of the movie. It takes more than a few good moments to make a good film and THE BOX is completly off. Too bad, this could have been a good film.
