The Boss of it All, 2006

Finding his "Breaking the Waves" interesting but almost boringly long, I did not watch another Lars van Trier for many years. In an unexpected development, he may now be my favorite working director. This has been the result of a couple movies, and confirmed by this offbeat, low-key comedy, touching on the absurdity which can invade even everyday situations. He is sort of confessing what a wheeler-dealer, trickster he has to be with his actors in filmmaking as a director by making a similar arrangement among his characters. This is almost never laugh-out-loud funny, but it is intriguing and amusing, especially about the way people hide parts of themselves, yet seek to express it eventually somehow. 4.5 stars 8.09
