This film is entertaining and funny. The plot doesn't develop well, and is a bit stupid, especially towards the end but as you watch it you enjoy the scenes for themselves. In this kind of film it's the characters that make the movie interesting rather than the plot and the two main leads are great to watch.
Could've been a great movie if it had a better plot, but was entertaining enough to keep me engaged for the length of the movie.

Scenes are totally complete. Many times I was thinking to myself "Yes! That's the perfect moment to end this scene!" And it was weird, I never noticed this kind of thing in other movies.
Actors did their job perfectly as well as film characters were good developped. No doubts about "who is who" and no thoughts like "this kind of guy shouldn't do that".
Soundtrack sends shivers. Of course, it is not hard to do that with this kind of epic music.
The only thing that's not great is the script. (SPOILER ALERT). They were butchers, killed one gyu in self-defence and became professional killers? And that father thing was kind of lame.
So, to my mind, Troy Duffy is not great as scriptwriter (has some interesting ideas though), but as director he done really amasing job here.

Another 'cool' film
This film, like films from Guy Ritchie, Quentin Tarantino, and others, is a stylish film about criminals. In this case they are 'saints', but thematically it's identical. Unlike the aforementioned directors' works though, I didn't find this one to have the same level of style or character development that would normally be the redeeming qualities of a movie so devoid of moral insight or exploration.
It was fun, don't get me wrong. I like the two main characters and their brotherly bond, but I didn't feel like the movie conveyed the sense of place strongly enough (and there's no excuse for this in a movie that takes place in Boston). I also felt that it was so unapologetically into the idea of vigilante justice that it discredited itself as having any real intellectual value. The premise behind each character was interesting, but they didn't develop any of them enough to have enduring value.
In short, it's a decent movie that could have been a lot better. Still, it's worth seeing.

Why couldn't I give this film the 5 or even 4 stars that most reviewers gave it? Well, this movie certainly has moments of 4 or 5 star power, but it's fundamentally flawed at a number of places. For starters (warning - spoiler), after chasing the boys through multiple murder scenes, the gifted investigator (Dafoe's character) suddenly decides to help the vigalantes after a drunken episode in a confessional, which is unconvincing, even given his drunken state. Furthermore, after sobering up he inexplicably decides to stick with his plan and help them out in their vigalante killings (or at least look the other way). Moments like these, and hit or miss dialogue overshadow the moments of gifted screenwriting for this genre. Movies such as "The Limey" are more even paced and are overall a more well-crafted and enjoyable film. It's no wonder the writer director Troy Duffy hasn't been seen or heard from since. There's even a documentary about how this hapless screenwriter stumbled into this script and can't seem to even pull together a sequel, regarless of the fact that this movie begs for one. The inconsistency of the Boondock Saints makes sense given this fact. It seem clear that the moments of brilliance were the exception and the stilted, sometimes awkward, often unbelievable moments are the rule. There are gems in this movie, and it's not all bad, just don't expect a 5 star outing.

The Boondock Saints is a highly stylized, tightly wound action thriller about two brothers who become vigilante justice killers. That is about the whole plot right there, with a little religious symbolism thrown in for good measure. What makes the film so good (and why all the kids love it so much) is that style trumps substance in such a marvelous fashion here. The best parts of the film (besides every line of dialogue that Willem Dafoe speaks) are the slow-motion action sequences that build in intensity through some of the best slo-mo editing I have ever seen, coupled with perfect music accompaniments. This movie looks amazing, and sometimes that's enough. Also, the brother's characters are drawn just enough for us to like them and be on their side, but not so much that any 'drama' would take away from our enjoyment of them killing a man by dropping a toilet on him (in what is arguably the best scene in the film).

It is a solid first feature, its too bad Troy Duffy ended his own career, he couldve probably continued making interesting films.
