The Boat That Rocked, 2009

This film is so funny! The music is great and just watching it really makes you feel as if you've been transported to the 60's. Everyone needs to watch this film!

Pirate Radio, despite meandering all over the place manages to stay afloat bravely enough -- at least until the climax, which comes off as a confused marriage between a Top 40 countdown and Titanic.The film is a series of episodic scenes which spotlight a host of characters who, without narrative material, become a mere collection of quirks, costumes, and gestures. It is hard to have an awful movie with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bill Nighy.

I honestly did not enjoy this movie. I felt the filmmakers forced too much of an emotional connection, with the characters, the plot, and the setting, to be any good. The Macguffin "father" plot was disappointing on so many levels, and the third act came out of nowhere. By the time the *SPOILER* boat started sinking, my suspension of disbelief was so far gone that I almost didn't care that a massive fleet of boats showed up just in the nick of time. I mention these specific points as indicitave of a larger plot of unshaven radio jocks vs (poorly acted) government stiffs that just left a bad taste in my mouth throughout. Go in with low expectations.
