I have to admit, 40 minutes into the movie and I was honestly wondering what people saw in The Blues Brothers. But wanting to give the film its fair chance, I persevered. Once Jake and Elwood assembled their band, the fun really began. The beginning was mostly setup, with a few humorous bits that were spread far too thin. You see Jake and Elwood running around together trying to get their old band back together. They act like they own the world an no one can touch them. When theyre by themselves, this doesnt make much sense, but its hilarious later on.
Finally, they get everyone back together and hit the road. Im generally not a big fan of musicals or the kind of music featured in The Blue Brothers, but I have to admit, they do it right. Every single piece they perform had me instantly tapping my toe. I never expected such greatness to come from Dan Akroyd and John Belushi. Never. The laughs start coming more frequently, the music rocks, and the characters are hilarious. Its at this point that the movie really starts to get moving. The pace picked up and I was glued to the screen for the rest of the running time.
And lets not forget the car chase! While its still full of humor and set to music only found in a movie like The Blues Brothers, the chase seen rivals the best. It covers lots of ground, over varying terrain, and involves what seems like hundreds of police cars, many of them crashing at some point. But Elwood deftly maneuvers the beat up Dodge in and out of danger, around obstacles, and even manages to perform a back flip. Alright, it gets a bit ridiculous at a few points, but its still great fun.

One of my all-time favorites. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a treat.
A word about the extended version: most of it is just longer scenes (see below); the two complete scenes cut into to this version don't add a thing; they belonged on the cutting room floor in 1980.
That said though, what the extended version does offer is fantastic: longer versions of ALL the songs! Every single song, every dance number, all of it, is longer -- so if you're a fan of the movie but haven't seen this version, the extra music is well worth it!

One of Chicago's best exports
This is shown on TBS on a regular basis - for a reason. If you watch it there, you definitely aren't getting the full experience...you need to watch it with the volume cranked and your sunglasses on. Jake and Elwood's quest to save their Catholic orphanage is unparalled - nothing else matters. No one will stop them - not the Nazis, vengeful Romanians, nor the men and women of the Illinois State and Chicago Police. This is one of the most quotable movies in existence with one of the best car chase scenes ever. You got my Cheez Whiz, boy?

Hilarious Wild Ride
I think I saw this film more than 50 times, I know most of the dialogue by heart, and I can watch it another 50. A celebration of chaos and mayhem, great music, witty dialogue, surprising cameos and cinema's most amazing car chase (I think there isn't any other film that managed to destroy so many cars during shooting) - who needs more! The story of how this film got to be made demonstrates the joy and magic of filmmaking. It started as a sketch in Saturday Night Live, and then a wild unrealistic story with a lot of love for music was thrown into the air, famous friends and colleagues joined forces, and what started as a joke turned out to be one of cinema's most wild and exciting rides. When I visited Chicago a few years ago, I used this films as a tour guide. It was a good way to get familiar with the city while trying to find all the locations where the film was shot...
