uneven and miscast
This is a stylistically uneven film with a severe shortage of star power to hold it all together. Hartnett, Eckhart and Johansson fail to hold interest for the first half and are swallowed by the striking design elements and a good deal of complicated exposition. Their performances come across as far too naturalistic and superficially twitchy for the material. It is only Swank who is able to find the right tone and the film comes alive only when her character is first appears. Things gradually progress from classic film noir to de Palma's campy horror and we see gruesome acts that would have been far more potent if merely suggested - a sick and twisted world existing only faintly in the shadows, compelling our unconscious minds to fill in the rest.

I think giving this film a 6/10 is probably generous. The problem with this film is it's too melodramatic. The acting is okay, but the plot...it's all over the place. It goes from the original, true tale of a woman murdered, and turns it into the story of a lost policeman who's in an odd love triangle with his police partner and girlfriend.
It's just odd. There are so many plot points, robberies, love interests, plots within plots. And so. many. characters who have similar names. it's so hard to keep track of it all.
It strayed way too far. If it had kept to the facts, maybe it would have been better.

I like this particular film because of the two leading ladies, HILARY SWANK, & SCARLETT JOHANSSON, A bit of a thriller, kinda sexy and very entertaining. 5 STARS in my humble opinion

They say that movie audiences have strange tastes, that in tense times, such as we live in now, that we want to watch tense movies. Somehow they make us feel better about ourselves. One would expect the opposite. The Black Dahlia is one such tense, whipcord of a movie. Along with LA Confidential, it has to be considered as one of the finest noirs of the past 15 years. The actors bear the weight of the subject matter, smoking incessantly, furrowed brows a countenance constant. It all makes for enjoyable crime-drama, although it was going a bit far to explain or demystify perhaps the "greatest" unsolved crime in history. The mystery only adds to the mystique and should remain nebulous.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. I do not recommend this movie to anyone. Maybe an even sorrier excuse for a movie.

The Black Dahlia
The director tried to make a movie that feels like an old time mystery, but the result is uninteresting and slow. I didn’t understand exactly what they were trying to do. I was very disappointed by this movie.
