The Bird People In China, 1998

This film stands as evidence that Takashi Miike is a cinematic genius. Here, Miike has created a paean to the transformative power of innocence. A Japanese businessman travels to a remote Chinese Shangri-La to investigate a rich find of jade. A yakuza has been assigned to keep an eye on him; the businessman's company owes money to the mob. When they get to the isolated village, both begin to undergo changes as the yakuza turns into a wrathful guardian and the businessman into a devotee. Visually stunning and with a marvelous plot, Miike is really flexing his movie muscle here. His range is amazing; "virtuoso" seems an applicable title. Watch this and "Visitor Q" close together and you'll see what I mean.
