A fine, heartwarming, earnest pic that requires more than a little suspension-of-disbelief; go into the film with the object being entertainment--leave your mind (and your elementary school education) behind--Thornton, Madsen and the Polish brothers...

A fine, heartwarming, earnest pic that requires more than a little suspension-of-disbelief; go into the film with the object being entertainment--leave your mind (and your elementary school education) behind--Thornton, Madsen and the Polish brothers will take you on a fun, captivating ride, if your intellect will allow it.

This film was in "long wait" status for a while before I was finally able to see it and perhaps that anticipation built up too much and that had something to do with how disappointed I was with it. This film tries to be a nice, inspiring family film...

This film was in "long wait" status for a while before I was finally able to see it and perhaps that anticipation built up too much and that had something to do with how disappointed I was with it. This film tries to be a nice, inspiring family film and I did get a warm feeling when the family rallies behind the titular Astronut Farmer (spelling intentional) even after facing all sorts of setbacks and ridicule, but mostly it was just boring. I can definitely appreciate wanting to instill a "reach for the sky" (heh, literally in this case) attitude in your children, but Billy Bob plays the role with a little too much his "crazy" look and that turns Farmer into more of psychotic flake instead of an eccentric dreamer. The rest of the actors all did a great job especially Virginia Madsen doing the best she can with the stock "encouraging wife" role. At least the filmmakers didn't even TRY to make the farmer's whole endeavor believable so we were spared a bunch of technobabble and pseudo-science.
