Late Night Watch
Very good movie but I only recommend it for when your in a particular mind frame. If your feeling mellow and are not in a rush, then this movie is complex, somber, realistic, and beautiful.

I enjoyed this movie more after watching the 'documentary' included on the DVD. The movie dives a little deep into each character and not being up on my Jesse James history, those subtleties were lost on me until after I finished the movie. It was well acted and held my attention, but I think that I would have given it a rating of four stars if I had known the story before watching the movie.

Make sure you pay attention to this movie right from the start because it is very easy to get lost. There are many subplots and twists that it's hard to wrap your head around enough to enjoy the movie. It's one of Brad Pitt's better films as well as a different role for Casey Affleck, who appears to be finally making his own name as an actor. This is a slow moving film that stays true to the era it represents and is perfect for fans of serious dramas and suspense movies based on actual events.

The film manages so richly to convey the allure, the excitement, the world-weariness of Pitt's Jesse James. While most westerns have shallow, nay, archetypal characters, AJJ (for brevity) has some of the most tortured and ambiguous characters I've seen in years, not predictable, and not shallow. The roles are performed with understatement, but not lack of emotion. The plot is slow, but I felt that it was necessary for the rich characterization. With a desaturated color palette (think Christina's World) , and contemplative cinematography, it is also a visual masterpiece. If for no other reason, watch the movie to see the train robbery that happens early on, with Brad Pitt standing on the tracks. Absolutely beautiful! It pairs well with other "Modern/Existential Westerns" like No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood.

WARNING!!! THIS IS NOT AN ACTION FILM. RENT 3:10 TO YUMA WITH RUSSELL CROWE IF YOU WANT CONSTANT ACTION. This is a film about a legend (Pitt as Jesse James) and the kid who looks at him as an idol (Affleck as Robert Ford).
You know what ends up happening since the title of the film tells it all but this is an emotional film about trust and regret. I re-watched certain scenes and enjoyed them more the second time around. This film is almost like a docu-drama and feels like something so authentic you could swear it was a documentary. I read all the glowing reviews on this film but none stated that this was mostly a talking film with very little action. Once I understood that I loved every moment of this film and to watch what happens to Robert Ford after he kills his hero was stunning. I could care less about Ben Affleck's little brother but he was just as good as Brad Pitt who also did an amazing job. This western will take you back to that time period and make you care about Jesse James without glorifying him. This is a very un-hollywood type of film since it is all about character study and emotions with an amazing script. Be warned that this film will not appeal to everyone. For those who find this film "boring" I just wish you give it a chance and spend some time invensting a little in this film because the rewards will pay off at the end. I really enjoyed The Assassination of Jesse James and hope you give it a chance and it enjoy it too.

I was glued to my seat. The best part about this film is that it could have easily been a set up for failure given how slow the story is, but the tension created by each actors performance (and the astounding score by Nick Cave) left me wanting more. The last thing the world needs is another typical, gun slinging western.
