It's a B movie. A contemporary tough-guy movie. Yes, it has nearly the plot complexity of "Crash" and some pretensions to its deeper meaning (plus some recent Magical Realism) that I don't think it really reaches. I had trouble deciding if I should even bother finish watching it, especially because of the boring scenes of extended violence, until I realized that it is like the the hard-boiled 40s and 50s crime movies it descends from, and is essentially topical melodrama. And a riff on the high-class stuff of today, like all good B movies are. All of which can add up to something interesting. Look at the very good "Gun Crazy" of over fifty years ago if you think the makers of B movies did not have real cinematic skill. Here, the violence is much more graphic---but tone that down, along with the language, bleach out the color film and glossy music and effects, and it is simply the contemporary version of that genre. Same sort of peek at underground world of demi-sleaze, but with hip hop music, and a high class apartment with improbably good art instead of a tenement or a cheap motel room (with bebop, or even jazz in the background). In twenty years or more years maybe I will call this a gem of its type. For now, let us just call it the New Noir. Are you man enough? 3 stars, give or take a star or two. 3.09

I saw this at Tribeca last year. Anyone who gives it a good review either has not seen many movies or works for Endeavor, or another one of the companies involved. It's really bad. It rips Amores Perros to the second and literally quotes it at times. Lucky for these guys that it's in Spanish, so fewer people will catch on. Anyway, it's really bad. Only got released because of the big cast involved and more importantly because it was produced by a satellite company of Endeavor and they didn't want to be embarrassed probably.

THIS HAS TO BE THE KINDEST REVIEW OF A MOVIE I ONLY GAVE A TWO STAR RATING.
The Air I Breathe has some great well known actors playing interesting characters. It also has a cool concepts with interweaving storylines like the movie Crash. My expectations were low and overall this was not a bad film. The main problem was that it seemed to have no point to it. I love films htat don't explain things and lets the viewer do the thinking but don't wander with no point. I guess the main thing The Air I Breathe was trying to convey was that were are here for a purpose and our lives have a domino effect on other people. That sounds interesting but you will see this movie and might really like it but it was a short film and left me and the person I was watching it with saying "was there a point to this?" So I won't say avoid this movie but I recommend with reservations if you like the actors listed and just are curious to see where this story goes.

You don't really realize until this film is finished that you just watched a high concept movie. The idea of the movie is that all the people on the cover - and in the film, are connected in some way, even with their many differing lifestyles and emotions. So the story plays out one character at a time (slowly), until all the pieces fit together. It's a method that's been used before, but never in a way this "pretty". There actually are a few thrilling moments in this movie, had there been more, I probably would've rated it higher. As it stands though, it's a solid movie with excellent acting, and characters that you will get attached to very quickly. I'm excited about this director and his future works, he has an excellent vision that is out of the ordinary.

This is one of those movies covering several loosely related storylines along the same lines of Crash and Amores Perros. The concept of the film is based on an ancient Chinese proverb about the four emotional cornerstones of life — happiness, pleasure, sorrow, and love and each of the four stories strive to portray those emotions in their own way. However, the movie works best if you focus on the individual stories instead of forcing all of them into those strained emotional themes. I don't usually get into movies with contrived relationships but I liked this one (except when it tries to be a sort of psuedo-noir film in one of the chapters) because of the cast. Brendan Fraser is surprisingly good as a mob henchman that can glimpse the future and Emile Hirsch has a small part as a comically sleezy and idiotic nephew of Andy Garcia's kingpin character.
