Passably amusing and diverting. Stereotyping of NASCAR culture and the south that almost kept me from enjoying the movie, even though I am neither a southerner nor a NASCAR fan so for all I know it was accurate. Biggest disappointment: The commentary track was unlistenably stupid. Two guys using the time as their chance to do "comic" dialog. We turned it off within 15 minutes. When I listen to the commentary track, I look forward to learning a lot about the movie I just watched. There was nothing to be learned here.

funny as heck. When is Will Farrell not funny though. the ending is pretty lame, but the rest of it has some really funny parts. the scene at the family dinner table is hilarious an is exactly how not to raise your kids.

Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. Ferrell and McKay have truly perfected the humor of the absurd ("I'm too drunk to taste this chicken") and Reilly is a comedic genius; I never, ever would have guessed that Reilly could be so funny...and he is one of my favorite actors! If you're looking for cerebral comedy, or even comedy that makes sense, skip this one. This movie is all about what's funny in the moment, and jokes that at times may be unconnected to the action or the plot. Also, if you are offended by young children cursing, you may want to skip this. Me, I think kids swearing is hilarious.

Midly funny, and with the identical plot and characters to all the other Will Farrell movies. As usual, all the really funny parts come during the closing credits, when you get outtakes and alternate versions of some of the funnier lines (the DVD has about 30 minutes more of this).
Cohen is surprisingly bad in this, showing almost none of the comedy skills of Borat or Ali G. Maybe it's the terrible accent he has to keep up the whole time?
The most annoying thing, though, is that there's literally not one single second of this movie which doesn't have some product placement or logo in it. I know it's a NASCAR movie, and, ha ha wouldn't it be clever to pack the whole thing with brand names just like a NASCAR event, but still...it's too much. In fact, the movie pauses at one point to show a real commercial for some crappy chain restaurant. A whole 30 second commercial! During the movie! It's shameless, and you get this sick creeping feeling that it's the first glimmer of a new trend: these suckers ain't going anywhere, let's just show 'em an ad! Golly, boss, that's a stroke of marketing genius!

I'm surprised by all the bad reviews I've read on here. Almost every other Will Ferrell movie (apart from Old School) has fallen flat on its face with me, but this one was really good. I was pleased to hear that NASCAR had sanctioned the movie, and were therefore in on the jokes. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but that doesn't matter with this movie. Will Ferrell's character is very funny, and "Shake and Bake!" side-kick John C. Reilly is a perfect foil.
I really enjoyed Gary Cole's role as Ricky Bobby's dead-beat dad, and Sacha Baron Cohen (I love Ali G!) puts in a wonderful performance as French Formula-1 driver, Jean Girard. His French accent is decidedly fake, but I doubt many in the audience will be any the wiser. Bringing a gay driver into NASCAR...now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are! (to borrow Larry the Cable Guy's catchphrase).

Loved it!
it's probably Will Farrell's best and funniest movie yet. so funny I just can't find the words to describe it. some phrases of it will become a classic one day, that's for sure. go watch it. you won't regret.

2 of the world's comic geniuses collaborate here and the result is a very funny movie that revolves around car racing. John C. Reilly also appears; from this movie on he's done only comedies and i can see why - he obviously enjoyed working with will...

Reilly also appears; from this movie on he's done only comedies and i can see why - he obviously enjoyed working with will ferrell (they are together again in stepbrothers, 2008) and he has a real talent for comedy. if you like the goofy, anarchistic will ferrell style you will like this one for sure!
