Remember Bruce Willis in the first Die Hard, tough as nails but emotionally vulnerable? There's some of that here. Enjoy the film for what it is. I did.

I liked this movie a little more than the 3 stars would indicate. Liam Neeson acts a bit the part of a James Bond "invincible", but as long as he kills all the bad guys, and as a father of a girl, I was okay with it. I kept thinking that the people...

I kept thinking that the people who made this movie were taking a dig at the French. In fact even though all the bad guys were Albanian, I hated the French in the movie more. Good action scenes made up for some less than great supporting role acting. Liam Neeson played the part well!

I think this movie is "best in class" for the action-thriller genre. All the action is done well (like Bond's Casino Royal, but at a faster pace). Plus, this film is highly elevated by the genuine heroism of the protagonist/father. He is expert at what he does and seeks his goal without apology or sappy self-doubt (i.e., no wining like '24's Jack Bauer). Also, he ruthlessly kills the villains like they definitely deserve (not simply 'knocked out' or 'brought to justice'--common in today's PC Hollywood movies). He's a man you proudly want defending civilization from the thugs and savages of the world.

The film is escapist entertainment. It doesn?t try to be anything more than a straight-up revenge film and that is at the same time its strength and failing. By embracing its action roots, it gives the audience many intense scenes. But by also doing it without giving a memorable protagonist or even a compelling villain character (no character is truly interesting in the film), Taken misses many emotional points that could have elevated it to classic status. It?s a fun film and, unfortunately, nothing more.

It's an action movie that tries to add drama through a plot where a father attempts to track down his daughter's kidnappers. That's it.
What makes an action movie great are twists. Taken doesn't have any. It's as straightforward as action films get.
Liam Neeson plays Bryan Mills, a retired spy who missed out on most of his daughter's childhood. Now, with a year before she goes to college, he is hoping to reconnect with her. She wants to go to Paris for the summer with a friend instead.
The opening act tries to show us the disconnect between Mills and his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace). It's mildly effective, but Grace's bad acting detracts from each scene. Grace is too old, 25, for the part of a 17-year-old girl. She's not believable and tries so hard to play down to the role. It was a poor casting choice.........Two stars

Imagine 24 without the complicated characters, clever bad guys, or intricate plots. There wouldn't be any point in watching it, right? The movie Taken has these flaws and one more: suspense is undermined throughout by dialogue that tries too hard to sound clever. The bad guys may as well be little arcade targets, and the wife and daughter are no help, so it is pretty much just a one man show. I thought Ransom (a movie was a similar thought) had its share of flaws, but at least in that movie the villain tried to mess with the parents' head. My quest for the perfect parental revenge-and-rescue movie continues.

The story of a divorced father who is seemingly a little overprotective of his only daughter. She gets kidnapped (obviously) in Paris and it so happens her father is also ex-CIA and he's gonna get her back. Yeah.. so the premise is average but the movie turns out to be actually pretty decent. There's one hitch though in watching this, you cannot overanalyze this movie otherwise you'll be picking it to pieces because there are just too many holes and leaps of faith. Taken at face value, the action is great and Neeson seems like a formidable vigilante rescuer. I liked that he didn't go easy on the enemies, simply wounding people - he just plain took them out. The rest of the cast are more or less filler around the story of him finding her - but they do fine enough. It's not overly long and it stays pretty focused, so I'd recommend it.

Another formula driven action film that wasn't actually bad, but at the same time is easily forgotten once viewed. I'll give them credit for attention to detail (watch for the first car roll at the construction site ;-), now if only they had given as much thought to the actual realities of the story. Nobody is that physically fit to walk away from some of these fight scenes without a scratch, there is no way to "prevent" that in real life. Also there was a lack of real chemistry between some of the characters, which caused the acting to be a bit on the bad side. Overall "Taken" is worth a single watch, its not very memorable, nor is it especially exciting, but it was fun while it lasted. At least I didn't fall asleep while watching it.

The Bottom Line:
This film is simple the fantasy that runs through every father's head when he even briefly considers what he would do if someone was to take his daughter.
Liam Neeson is not only believable in as a rather unbelievable character, but he fits quite easily into the role of a action hero of the caliber we would expect from James Bond.
