Seeing Superman all the way through for the first time makes me realize how perfectly cast Christopher Reeve was. Now I understand why so many people see him as THE Superman. Sure, he's not the biggest guy in the world. In fact, by today's Arnold standard (yes, Arnold is the standard, admit it) Reeve is quite puny. But he nails the whole Clark Kent / Superman dichotomy. He plays the shy, nervous Kent perfectly, but then becomes the confident hero as needed.
The DVD was darn good for a 25+ year old film. The audio was a new 6-channel mix from the original 6-track recording, and it sounds good. The score is pumped through all six speakers, along with a few decent surround effects from time to time. For an older movie, the sound is surprisingly aggressive an enveloping without sounding over-done or forced. The video looks good, with decent levels of detail and great colors. Even the glowing whites on Krypton at the beginning of the film looked good. The eight minutes of added footage was seamlessly restored. I couldn't tell when the original film parts ended and the additions began. Overall, a very good presentation.
