Superbad lives up to it's name. A sophmoronic comedy (middle school division) it slings fat jokes, weenie jokes etc non-stop in lieu of characters (Hill's is round only in morphology) and story.

Maybe it gets wonderful after a while, as, for example, Dumb and Dumber does, but ten minutes was my max, so I guess I'll never find out.

When this came out one newspaper critic, who in retrospect maybe was a little high when he wrote it, raved about it being as big a landmark in comedy for our age as "The Graduate" was for its time. Oh, really? Wow. But I did not rush to see it since I figured I saw the Dustin Hoffman movie many years after it first came out. But I had somewhat surprisingly liked "The 40-Year Old Virgin" pretty well, and thought the writers might have done something funny with this one. Unfortunately, this is not that great. There are a few real laughs, I will admit, but this is mainly the exploration of the mentality of regular goofy, uncool but mostly likable 14-to15 year old boys (who are supposedly 17-to-18 in the movie). They are having fantasies about the big guys, those who are about 19-to-20, apparently. In that respect, it is just a bit pathetic to someone admittedly a couple decades past that particular phase of developmental angst. But OK, if you want broad humor, and a few giggles in an adolescent frame of mind, this is not bad. (The 1970s references including the title show up rarely and don't make much sense here anyway.) But pathbreaking? A great creative breakthorugh? Unhuh, no way---just a passable teen comedy with about ten or fifteen minutes of silly stuff worth watching. (The first part of the liquor store situation is one really amusing highlight.) I have rounded it up to three stars in order to encourage more and better comedy in this world -- and to acknowledge the handful of real laughs in an otherwise pretty ridiculous if not quite totally lame movie. 1.09 _____ [A young friend tells me I am all wrong about this one, but I'm not changing my rating!]

Funny, but falls short of the hype
Superbad is a solid portrayal of high school based on my experiences, and definitely has lots of funny moments. The beginning and end both do a good job of exploring the complicated friendship and sexual tension of the two main characters. What I really didn't enjoy was the lengthy middle portion. It's a series of strange events that seem to detract to do with the main themes of the film. If some of the filler scenes (such as Fogel and the police officers) had been replaced with meaningful content, the film could have reached its full potential.

I can't see how some critics raved about this when I can't personally see any unique groundbreaking aspects of it. There are some moments when it is funny, however they're more to do with the characters and their situations and less to do with what they're saying. I wasn't turned off by the language or the graphic conversations, I was just not laughing at everything because I found it too stupid. I realize I'm the minority.

A THROWBACK TO WHEN COMEDIES WERE NOT PC AND YOU COULD JUST LAUGH AT A TASTELESS JOKE. I laughed hard at the early parts of the film and I enjoyed the portrayal of the goofy police. The film had the usual happy ending but the feel of the film was spot on and I can see why so many love this film. I have been out of high school for a long time but I still laughed at many parts. The only reason it was not four stars was that the second half of the film was predictable but still enjoyable. It started out so insane I just expected it to maintain that level which would have been almost impossible. Still this was a VERY fun watch and would see it again and recommended it to others who enjoy juvinile humor. Superbad is a rare film that many of us grew up seeing but is non-existence in today's world of not offending anyone.

Quite seriously one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. However, I think that your level of enjoyment will really depend on your life experience and your perspective. For instance, my perspective is that of a 29 year old male with the maturity level of a 24 year old male...who had an expereince JUST LIKE the characters in 'Superbad'. If you're a 42 year old soccer mom who grew up on an Army base in Thailand...you might not find it as funny as I did. However: maybe you will!
