Stray Dog, 1949

User cak 862115 makes a wonderful comparison between this film and Jules Dassins masterpiece The Naked City. Ive seen both films numerous times but until it was pointed out to me I never realized how similar they are. Stray Dog is Kurosawas attempt at making an American film-noir, and while he never really hits the mood of the American-noir, he almost single handedly created the Japanese-noir. I need to do more research into it, but Im almost certain that Stray Dog was the first Japanese-noir to be filmed in Japan. I know it wasnt the last. If you like this film, make sure you check out Kurosawas High and Low and The Bad Sleep Well, which are also wonderful films based on the American-noir.
