This film is absurd, ridiculously implausible, and yet, still hilarious in its absurdity. You need to watch this film with a very high suspension of disbelief just to accept any of the many crazy things happening (such as the sheer coincidence that there happens to be two forty year olds with the same adult-teenager complex who are now step-brothers). Once you do though, what follows is a genuinely funny film about two children who need to grow into their adult exteriors. Yes, many characters are one-dimensional. Yes, there is an abundance of coincidences. Yet despite those faults, the film still works because Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly embody their roles completely during the film and deliver fantastic performances as overgrown children. And let's be honest: there arent many films where Will Ferrell truly delivers. Aside from his fantastic portrayal of a literary character turned self-aware in Stranger than Fiction, he doesnt have much on his plate to celebrate. While this is no high art, its great to see Will Ferrell in a role that feels straight out of his strong Saturday Night Live years. This film surprisingly succeeds.

(3.5 stars) I really looked forward to this film, mostly for the Will Farrell/John C. Riley reunion, but was mildly disappointed. I liked this film enough for it to be a solid 3.5, almost 4, but it fell a little short, what with all the raunchy scenes, especially between Dale (Riley) and Brennan's (Farrell) sister-in-law; unnecessary. But, with all that aside, this movie had its numerous moments that had me laughing out loud. Just the premise alone is silly (two 40-year-olds still living at home until their parents meet & they become step siblings.) Will Farrell is just as silly in this movie as ever before, so if you are watching this film just for your Will Farrell fix, you won't be disappointed. Same goes for John C. Riley. But, if you aren't a fan of obscene comedy, just take your mouse off that 'add' button. NOW. You'll not like this film! 3.5 stars for making me laugh but minus another .5 for being so vulgar. 1/3/09

Step Brothers... definitely a return to form for Will Ferrell. After the disappointing missteps that were Blades and Semi-Pro, he succeeds at making one of his funniest characters, a Semi-Child. The banter between Ferrell and Reilly is really the funniest part of the film, because they are so good at improvising off of each other. I do hate to say that the funniest parts are in the trailer, but that is pretty much how it is. Everything funny from the trailer is extended in the movie though. I personally love when the new Step Brothers go job-hunting, and screw the interviews up intentionally. Judging by the cover, it probably could have been funnier, but no movie is perfect. This one makes up for a lot though. Adam McKay has a pretty good track record going, though he's starting to become awfully similar to another fellow named Judd.

If you laughed at the trailers, you will be rolling throughout the movie...I certainly couldn't stop laughing. However, I came to the end feeling like perhaps I had seen an outtake reel rather than a coherent film. Docked one star due to the lack of an enjoyable plot.
