I heard about State of Grace over at the Home Theater Forum (a great site for DVD and home theater info) and though it sounded like it was worth checking out. Wow, was I surprised! Just take one look at the cast, and then you'll understand. I love Ed Harris, and as usual he didn't disappoint. Gary Oldman came through with another amazing performance. He never ceases to amaze me with his versatility, and this was no exception. Sean Penn played the main character, and he was great. They were backed by a fabulous supporting cast with names like Robin Wright Penn, John C. Reilly, and John Turturro to name a few. The acting was flawless. You can't possible understand this until you see State of Grace.
The story, to sum it up, is about the Irish mob in New York. I'd guess the story is set in the late 80's, judging from the music and cars. There are plenty of names thrown around, but as long as you keep the major players straight you'll be fine. The story moves along fairly well, but State of Grace clocks in at 134 minutes, so it might seem long to some. I didn't think the pacing was bad at all, but I've read where some people disagree. The ending is worth the wait, trust me. State of Grace has one of the best endings I've seen a long while, and I'll just leave it at that.
In short, see this movie. State of Grace was awesome on all fronts, and the acting was second to none. If you like crime drama or mob movies, this is an absolute must see. If you like Sean Penn or Gary Oldman, run out and grab this now!
