This excellent film draws a viewer in deeper and deeper. With a sharp screenplay and some of the very best acting you'll see in a long while, especially from Frank Langella, you'll always feel as if you're watching events in the lives of real people and not movie characters. The basic story concerns a formerly lionized but now forgotten, and old, novelist, and the young grad student who comes into his life. The writer's world gets shaken up, and while it seems like it might give him a stroke, it's just what the doctor ordered, so to speak. The novelist's daughter also comes to a watershed moment as she too realized her life has been on stall. This may not sound like much to hang a movie on, but "Starting Out in the Evening" is so exceptionally compelling and well done on every level that I think the film will stay with you for a long time.
