One second more, one second less, they would all have been goners. I understand that this is necessary to make an exciting movie, Abrams, but don't overdo it.

Staying true to Star Trek atmosphere, this "update" is sure to please Trekkies and newcomers to the franchise alike. Quinto owned the part of Spock and certainly had to make Nemoy proud of his replacement. The new Captian Kirk is as witty and vain as William Shatner was in the original. There are great Trek-type action sequences and the humor is still there. Highly recommend to all.

No one will mark this helpful. I never made it through one episode of any of the "Star Trek" television series; I've never watched an entire Star Trek movie. I'm as virgin as they get. After watching Star Trek today, I can proudly say I've finally sat through an entire Star Trek-something. I will not be going back. That's not because Star Trek isn't good, because it has moments of greatness. It isn't because I thought it was bad, although there are times of great cheesiness. It is because I still don't care. I was thankful that every 10 minutes or so, the plot was dumbed-down and explained to me. Otherwise it would have been a 127-minute snoozer for me. Star Trek is about the coming-to-power, if you will, of Captain Jim Kirk (Chris Pine). It's the story of how Kirk and Spock (Zachary Quinto) learned to mutually respect each other. There's pain from family losses and mixed races and cultures. Romulus survivor Nero wants to kill Spock and the Star Fleet. Meanwhile, Kirk just wants to be captain and, of course, save the galaxy. Yada, yada, yada. J.J. Abrams directed it, so you know it's going to be exciting, terrifying, funny and intense.I think Star Trek would be more enjoyable to people who already have a relationship with the characters. See, most of the character development was done in the other movies and the TV shows, so that part needn?t be in the film. That left people like me out, and detracted from the experience. snurl.com/hqe3i

"STAR TREK," the 2009 iteration, is a disappointment. It's good that a fresh group of actors are playing the time-worn characters, but if only a tiny fraction of the time, money and effort spent on effects and promotion went into a good story. There's nothing emotionally involving in the characters, no chemistry between the actors, and no sense behind the plot developments. Things just happen; for example, in two shakes of a lamb's tale, cadet Jim Kirk is captain of the Enterprise. Virtually all the characters are cardboard cutouts, distilled amalgams of their TV and film-franchise counterparts, not living, breathing people. As an aging Trek devotee, I'm glad I saw it. As a critical movie-goer, however, the film kinda stunk.

Is it a sequel? Is it a reboot? No, it's both. And this film from J.J. Abrams also answers the question "How can we make a STAR TREK film that will please the old fans and not alienate the new fans on board, and please the new fans and not make the old fans grab angry mob weapons and burn down the theatre?". Well, the new film is a TREK time travel film, a well worn TREK story line, but every previous one is told from the instigator's point of view. This film is one that is told from the spectator's viewpoint, which means that young Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and others can only deal with the effect of actions, rather than be the cause of them. Of course, there are the same TREK cliche's (During a very crucial plot point that changes the new STAR TREK universe forever, a red clad landing party member dies in the most messed up way possible: I was very impressed), new ones (Spock and ?????, I'd never think that would happen), and the portrayal of the characters we know and love are dead on. Well, any-hoo, I give this new version of an old favorite four stars, and happy viewing!!! (A.M.A.D. 10-15-09)

In order, presumably, to make the movie palatable to younger fans, the script takes huge liberties with military plausibility (a cadet named as commanding officer of a starship? The original Kirk was all of 34 when he became captain, and even at that age, he was a young hotshot.) The cast generally resembles the original actors, both facially and vocally, except that Zoe Saldana is a much more beautiful Uhura (sorry Ms. Nichols). The special effects are state of the art. The editing was confusing: it was often difficult to see who was shooting/beating up whom, or where that guy had jumped to. This is a relaunch of the franchise, based on the original characters, and a lot of the movie had an "beginning" feel to it: they are introducing the characters and the real adventures are yet to come. The movie also used a time-travel device to completely alter the past and the future, which means they won't need to retcon this or the next film(s) with the original series (or any of the other series).

I wasn't expecting much from this film but it delivered far more than I thought possible. It's as focused on character as it is on action, in marked and pleasant contrast to most modern "reinvention" efforts and prefabbed blockbusters. The film provides plenty of backstory while honoring most of the best Trek traditions, including a liberal lacing of wry dry wit. The Enterprise has never looked this good before, either...visuals are outstanding. And FINALLY we get to see how Kirk "changed the conditions" of the Kobayashi Maru test. Fans of director JJ Abrams' show Alias will appreciate the inside joke of the "red matter." Granted, it's not Roddenberry, but neither is it as irreverent and irrelevant as I feared it might be. As someone who's been watching Trek and loving it since I was 8 years old, I really didn't think I'd go for this next generation. I really did, though.

I saw it opening day and in many respects the movie has brought back Trek from the mundane. J. J. Abrams did an excellent job with the production from talking to Leonard Nimoy and having his input on the movie to asking for advice from George Takei on casting issues. The actors themselves were excellent especially Karl Urban's role as Bones and Zachary Quinto as Spock. I expect many more things from Abrams with really soon and theirs talk of a Sequel in the works.
