Splinter, 2008

Night of the Living Dead meets The Thing. Splinter kept my interest and had no dull points. Very suspensefull and a few dark comedic moments.

This really started off great, I have to admit. A story about a creature that terrorizes two couples in the middle of nowhere and get trapped in an abandoned gas station. I'd give the first half of this movie a solid 4 and a half stars because while it started a bit slow and awkward, it wasn't bad. Then once we get to the gas station it kicks into high gear and I was totally into it, even cringing at multiple spots. The creature at this point is humanoid and pretty scary in the way it moves and looks - and treats a police officer. Then the problem is the movie begins to slow down - when you'd want it to increase the tension. There's a pretty graphic scene with an arm that made me wince, but overall it loses its momentum in the last quarter. The creature becomes less impressive or frightening, the characters begin to talk more, there's an overly long sequence of the nerd trying to get to the vehicle and then it's all wrapped up without any fanfare or horror. Overall, I gotta give it a good rating for doing a decent job in the first half and for low cost. FYI, on 6-17-2009 the last 8 minutes of the HD feed on the Roku had the audio cut off, had to switch to the standard stream to hear the rest.

At times predictable but Splinter is a a fast moving, suspense filled horror movie. Nothing groundbreaking here but if you enjoy horror films about being stuck in middle of nowhere with an outerworld creature torchering it's victims then rent this movie. I have seen many films like this but still enjoyed it. Before you know it, the film credits are rolling and you were entertained. If you don't find this review helpful then move on..no need to click Not Helpful. What do you want me to do? Give the film away, Rent it!
