Profile of Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3 can be described as exciting, sentimental, and suspenseful. The plot revolves around secret identities, superhuman powers, and superheroes. The main genres are fantasy and action. In terms of style, Spider-Man 3 has a Hollywood tone. In approach, it is fantastical and serious. The storytelling is fast paced. Spider-Man 3 is located in New York. It takes place in contemporary times. Visually, it involves special effects. Spider-Man 3 is adapted from a comic. The movie has received attention for being a blockbuster. It is well suited for teens, a date night, and a family outing. Note that Spider-Man 3 involves violent content.

Summary of Spider-Man 3

The Marvel comics hero returns for more high-flying fun in this third installment in the series. Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is up to his usual Spidey tricks, attending university classes as an awkward geek, then quickly slipping into his red-and-blue suit to save New York City from various villains. And there are villains aplenty. Thomas Hayden Church blows in as the Sandman, an escaped convict whose molecular structure is destroyed in a particle accelerator. The freak accident gives him the ability to form and reform from piles of dust. While the Sandman sifts through the city streets robbing banks, Spidey must also contend with his onetime friend, Harry (James Franco), who has taken up where his father, the Green Goblin, left off. Harry chases Spider-Man down on his goblin glider, hurling pumpkin bombs. But Spider-Man's biggest battle is perhaps within himself, when he is taken over by meteorite ooze--a substance that gives him great power, but also turns him into a vengeful, selfish jerk. Throw into the mix Peter's new competition at the Daily Bugle--the ambitious, sneaky Eddie Brock (Topher Grace)--and Peter's relationship troubles with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst), and Spider-Man 3 weaves a tangled web indeed.

Director Sam Raimi's playful style and his delightfully campy screenplay hold true to the spirit of the Stan Lee comics, and he does an excellent job of hitting all the right superhero notes. Raimi has created an action film that is a feast for the eyes, but comes with fully rounded characters and a moving moral lesson to boot. The special effects are astounding, but Raimi makes sure the film isn't all action and no talk--he makes Peter's struggle a human one, and one that we can all relate to, regardless of our web-spinning ability.

Spidey goes SPLAT! After thoroughly enjoying the first two Spider-man movies, I was looking forward to the third. I'm sorry to say that it didn't deliver. The story drags and the warmth of the first two films is lacking, leaving nothing to propel it through the long build-up to the climactic battle scene. The chemistry between the main characters seems to have evaporated in between the second and third installments. There's a coldness and distance to this movie, and in a movie about superheroes there needs to be a strong human element. There are some very silly moments, even for a movie based on comic books. What happened to the writing? You don't have a physicist point out that "I'm not a biologist" and in the next line have him declare that an organism never before seen "has the traits of a symbiont." Later, this "just a physicist" also suddenly has detailed knowledge of meteorites that fell 30 years prior. Huh? Also disappointing was the character of Venom, a one-dimensional caricature who occupies far too little of the film after all the build-up to his appearance. That being said, Topher Grace does an excellent job in his portrayal of Eddie Brock/Venom. The ending of this film attempts to be a multiple tearjerker in such a self-conscious way that it doesn't work at all. We get such a schmaltzy ending this time around that there wasn't a wet eye in the house. It couldn't have been done in a more heavy-handed manner if Mary Jane had walked back and forth across the screen in a sandwich board painted with the words "Cry now!" The most disappointing point in this movie is the re-writing of the Uncle Ben's death. To introduce this new element seems dishonest; it also makes the ending of the film make no sense, as Spider-man lets the villain who killed his uncle escape. Why? He gets away to rob and kill another day. It's a very poor note upon which to end the three-film saga. Rest in peace, Spidey. You had a good run.
