It's a cross between the Coen brothers and David Lynch. And that's just great. that goes for the soundtrack as well.
Although a bit confusing a times, the movie has a story to tell.
Don't bother with popcorn, it's not that kind of movie.

dont bother watching
I liked donnie darko... allot... watched it like 5 times in total since it was released... and let me tell you this, southland tales is NOTHING like donnie darko whatsoever

I liked donnie darko... allot... watched it like 5 times in total since it was released... and let me tell you this, southland tales is NOTHING like donnie darko whatsoever
i was really looking forward to another "mindf**k" movie and sure, this might be one.... but its not intresting in any way, the plot is just awful... acting isnt top notch (sorry buffy<3 but its true)... dont bother picking this movie up unless your REAAAAAAAAAAALLY bored.... it was so boring that after 1 hour or so of this crap, i started fastforwarding just to see if it got better... and it didnt
here is some movies you might (and probably will) enjoy however: "donnie darko", "S. darko", "spiral", "the jacket", "pandorum", "inception", "the signal" and many more

Ummm confused. I think that the movie has been re-edited to the point of no return. This could have been great but the characters were so comic bookish that you lost interest in the characters. Lots of movies are based on comics or were made into...

If your IQ is under 135, you probably wont like this movie.
That said, its the best irony-laden, post-9/11 political satire about porn star revolutionaries and quantum mechanics that one could hope for.

Well, it certainly wasnt mainstream. This movie feels like Kelly wanted to push the boundaries further of abstractness than Donnie Darko and he achieved that, but also went so far as to miss the point really of sitting down and watching a movie. It took me 3 nights to watch this entirely because while its bright, bouncy, theatrical, thought provoking, strange and everything else - its just not all that entertaining. I kept watching each night though hoping in some ways that it would all make some sense at the end, and unfortunately theres just too many themes, characters and just plain nothing happening to be able to pull it together. I give it 2 stars for at least having the guts to put this mess out there in the first place.

I went into Southland Tales with high expectations, and left with a splitting headache. The plot is busy and there are tons of characters, all of whom you will recognize from other films. The movie is to long and none of the stories really pull...

I went into Southland Tales with high expectations, and left with a splitting headache. The plot is busy and there are tons of characters, all of whom you will recognize from other films. The movie is to long and none of the stories really pull together sufficiently enough to satisfy. I will be fair and give credit for a well thought out and intelligently made film that was definitely different. But unless you want to view it several times to try to piece all the parts together to give it meaning, I'd suggest skipping it. This one definitely falls into the category of movie that "You keep watching hoping the next scene will reveal all, only to be disappointed." Those who are fans of truly "Artsy" films may have a different view. This is a "Love it or Hate it" movie for sure.

The man who directed Donnie Darko's second film IS A COMPLETE MESS!! I didnt want Donnie Darko part 2 and I love bizzare movie but to have no point at all is a waste of time. The concept of this film are very interesting and the cast is full of stars but most are miscast for there parts. I gave this film every chance and read the bad reviews but I like a film or a music album that set's itself apart from the rest. With that said I'm not going to accept confusion for entertainment and everything needs to have A POINT. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a complete drug induced movie and made more sense than this poorly edited self indulgent "art" film. Yes Richard Kelly deserves credit for taking a chance but Good God Man, make something that is not a bunch of dream sequences thrown together and called a film. For those of you who are curious and think what I am writing is untrue, then watch it and be honest and you will see I was not full of it. To be fair, moments of Southland Tales give you hope then IT REMINDS YOU THAT THIS WILL NOT GET ANY BETTER..then the credits roll. I look forward to Richard Kelly's third movie and have hope he will rebound from the mistake called Southland Tales.

Richard Kelly is a little too full of himself. Donnie Darko was alright, this movie was wretched. While the two movies aren't necessarily connected in any way, it feels as though Kelly ran out of ideas and implemented a lot of imagery and dialogue...

My boyfriend enjoyed it a lot when we saw it in theater, so I didn't have the option of walking out.
