Gary Cole stars as Gen. George Armstrong Custer: A multi layered look at the controversial American General, Civil War Hero, and Fabled Indian Fighter. The politics that led him to be at the head of the 7th Army and trying to round up the Indians so that the Whites could gain unfettered access to the Gold Fields of Deadwood. Breaking treaty after treaty, Whites were pushing the Indians further and further west, Finally there was a gathering of Indians at The Little BigHorn, several tribes. General Custer decided to attack this superior force of Indians and he made some very vital and tragically bad decisions. The bad decisions of refusing of an additional four companies of the 2nd Cavalry. The incredible decision to leave a battery of Gatling Guns knowing he was faced with superior forces. The decision on the day of the battle to divide his 600 man command into 3 separate columns spelled disaster because he was so vastly outnumbered. All of this is dramatized in the film and you can see the mistakes adding up to the Indians over running Custer. Did his fellow officers fail to attack as reported, probably so, did they fail to come to his rescue even though they were in the sound of the guns, they failed to come to his rescue. Custer faced 1,000 Indians, (the lowest estimate). Many eye witnesses put the figure at 3,500 - to- 5,000, in any case Custer surely could have used the troops offered from the 2nd Cavalry, and the Gatling Guns he left behind could have made the difference as to whether he could have survived facing such a large force of Indians. In the end it was Hubris that killed General George Armstrong Custer, he started to believe his press, believe the things that people were writing about him, believe that he could whoop any bunch of Indians that he faced. That was Custers Last Stand. 5.0 STARS. Highly recommended.
