Summary of Some Kind of Wonderful

Keith (Eric Stoltz) is finishing up with high school. A sensitive loner, he prefers to work on his art over going to sporting events and hanging with the cool crowd. Instead, he platonically whiles away the hours with Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), the pixieish drummer girl he's known since grade school. But Keith does have one popular obsession: Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), the most desired girl in school--and girlfriend of obnoxious rich guy Hardy Jens (Craig Scheffer). When Hardy and Amanda part ways, Keith finally has his chance---and true blue Watts will do all that she can, even it that means biting her tongue and suppressing her true feelings for her longtime friend. John Hughes' follow-up to the classic PRETTY IN PINK takes essentially the same story and flips the gender roles, with another positive "follow-your-heart" message and a great soundtrack featuring the Jesus & Mary Chain, Flesh For Lulu, and the March Violets.

Critics Reviews

TV Guide
Stoltz turns in a restrained, realistic performance, and Thompson is quite good in what could easily have become a thankless role. But far and away, this is Masterson's film. An amazingly mature young actress, Masterson skillfully brings subtlety,...
The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
Yet the performances are just sturdy boats against the narrative current - the plot is altogether too calculated and wholly without surprises, either pleasant or unpleasant... The painting is just fine; too bad the numbers show through.

As the Jinni page says this is essentially a role reversal of Hugh's other film, pretty in pink. Although similar in nature to Pretty in Pink, Some kind of wonderful likes the emotional intensity, and excitement of it's predecessor. An easy watch,...
