CONTAINS SPOILERS... We discussed this film in our Friday Film club selection and these are some of the thoughts we came up with. "The film's charm is that it doesn't delude itself by pretending to be something it isn't. Yuen set out to make an action film brimming with sensational stunts, exciting gunplay and cheeky humor and starring three attractive women. Lau's script espouses a feminist message, not only with the sisters' high-kicking independence, but also with Hong's struggle in a male-dominated police force. But feminism isn't the film's main goal. Dazzling us with awe-inspiring action is. And Yuen packs his film with plenty of it.
One particularly astounding display of gunplay features Lynn, clad in a tight white body suit, calmly eviscerating an army of bad guys in a shiny high-rise. The sequence features the most novel pair of stiletto heels and quite possibly the best and cheekiest use of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You" I've heard in a movie.
There's also a rousing fight between two handcuffed women within the claustrophobic confines of a parking garage. No wisecracks, no expressions of bravado. No dialogue whatsoever. Just the grace and beauty of a magnificently choreographed action sequence." I of course gave the film a 5 star rating.

My current favorite action movie. There's lots of horrible movies that try to make the women drive the action but very few that can pull that off, let alone also have a moving story. (There's some, though, that work as comedies.) The best similar movies I've found so far available from Netfl*x: Naked Killer (1992), Chocolate (2008), Noir (7-Disc series) (2001), and Yo-Yo Girl Cop (2006). I recommend the original audio language for all. Other than that, there's old Moon Lee movies from the beginnings of this genre. Netfl*x has The Avenging Quartet (1992), but most aren't too great and are only available on VCD or VHS. A Serious Shock! Yes Madam! (1992) is one of the better ones.

I am sick, sick sick of the slo-mo, ultra badassness that the action flicks (hong kong or hong-kong inspired) tend to fall into. 'So Close' suffers from a lot of this, but it makes up for the cliche and overdone with great computer artistry that enhances the action.
In the beginning, it's like every other martial arts movie from chine, but in the thrid act, I have to admit that I was very excited. A plot twist occurs that jumpstarts the standard plot, and the choreography in the final fight is superb.
So it's a mixed bag, but it's not a one star movie.
