I've become quite a fan of Danny Boyle. His work with The Beach, 28 Days Later, and especially Sunshine has impressed me. So it is no surprise that I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire even if it is an intriguing career move. Despite the huge chasm of dichotomy by juxtaposing the likable and sheer positive humanity with the truly tragic elements of this film, the intertwined relationships these ideas have are skillfully woven into a seamless story that is masterfully portrayed by skilled actors. The squalor, exploitation, and corruption so rampant in a country like India is battles against an unlikely hero who embodies humanities fight against tyranny and oppression. All this results in a warming, inspiring ending that can be universally celebrated.

All for one. Jamal is one question away from winning Indias Who Wants to be a Millionaire? And he doesnt care. Hes living the dream, rising from Slumdog to fame and wealth. All of India is rooting for him, and he still doesnt care. Hes escaped death numerous times. He doesnt care. He only cares about finding one of his Musketeers. One for all.
Slumdog Millionaire is the ultimate love story. We meet Jamal as hes held by mean-looking military types in some holding area. Hes smacked by one of them and asked how he knew the answers. They think he cheated. After all, how could an uneducated 18-year-old from the streets of Mumbai possibly know anything about the world?
Jamal says he just does. Thats not good enough for his captors, so they throw in the tape of his first day on the game show and make Jamal explain how he knows the answer to each question.
He explains the answer to each successive question through stories of his childhood, chronologically.
Theres a scene at the start where Jamal is in an elevated outhouse. Indias most famous actor, Amitabh Bachchan, flies in on helicopter to sign autographs. Jamal badly wants one, but Salim pins a chair against the outhouse door. Jamal jumps into a 5-foot-high pile of excrement and runs to Bachchan to get the autograph. He does, and dances with joy, dripping with the unthinkable.
We experience the same journey. We arent rewarded until we see the atrocities and have gone through hell along with Jamal. When we get the payoff, we remember what we went through, but are so overwhelmed with joy we dont care were covered in poo. Five stars.

Somewhere between the classic artistry of a few certain older Indian films and the shimmering total-fantasy world of contemporary Bollywood productions comes this rather winning new film in a moderately realist mode. In it, desperately poor young brothers actually are adoring fans of Bollywood stars, and their own lives are portrayed as less than totally grim. These urchins have pluck and a sense of adventure, and the young actors are all really good, representing different ages as they grow up. A bit like Warners Bros movies of the thirties which found likeable qualities in poor Dead-End kids in big city America. I saw this in the Christmas season so that may be in part why I will give it a positive reaction. It is amazing to look at -- the colors of fabrics and business lights are rich and almost glow, even when depicting the settings of slum poverty, or crowded streets -- which is a sort of dubious prettifying thing to do, but there are complications about that, too, that mitigate it (such as the individual dignity each person may find despite unfair conditions, and conditions such as the casual police brutality, which is not pretty). But it has true love, loyalty, honor and a happy ending, with a celebratory cinematic kiss under the closing credits. This is a terrific movie about a country that is changing a lot, and I will not quibble with it, although one could pose socio-political objections. I have to admit that after getting caught up in the enormously sympathetic lives of the leading characters, I was very relieved to have a classic happy ending present itself. It's just that kind of movie; very much of our time right now. This, to coin a phrase, is the stuff that dreams are made of -- in other words, how the history of the movies has held the world in thralldom. Can you stand it? (And all this from that director of pointed inversion, Danny Boyle!) 12.08

Slumdog Millionaire is a film that lightly treads so many themes that the actual subject of the film, which I found laughable, is so easily forgotten. This film is not about social injustice, poverty or love but rather the lame and tired subject of "destiny." The film uses poverty as a plot device to create sympathy for its characters. Manipulating the audience for two hours with shots of "slumdogs" living their difficult lives without ever offering any reason why these characters are living in such circumstances. In fact our main character is not even smart or talented, he doesnt even have a single characteristic that makes him special. How does our protagonist become a millionaire and escape poverty? Well it has nothing to do with the will of the main character or any other character in the film. He escapes poverty because "it was written."
Seriously? That's the lesson of this film? Was this script written by the WTO? What a great and humane message to the one billion people on this planet living in extreme poverty: "You cannot escape poverty without divine intervention. Give up now."

Since everyone hated my long-winded review with all my carefully chosen words, I threw it out. An average movie. Basically you could take all the worst aspects of me, put it in a movie, and say that's the real moviemeh. So why not do the same with India? Anyway thanks to this movie, I'll get to see Anil Kapoor in 24's Season 8, so I can't complain too much.

Who would have thought that a movie that starts with torture could be such a feel good crowd pleaser? What amazes me most about Danny Boyle is that you cant pin him down to a specific genre or type of movie and each one is a great film. Boyle is not one to settle for what sells or to be hemmed in by a reputation for certain kinds of films.
The structure of the movie is unique and adds so much to the story. The movie is practically bursting with life even in the slums and the story is a thing of beauty. I can find no fault in this movie. It hits every note perfectly and the emotions are all earned. I dont know how they did it but the kid actors they found were truly phenomenal. At the end of this, I was grinning like an idiot and wanted to see it again as soon as it was over.

It got so bad at one point that I almost turned it off but stayed with it to see what the heck all the Oscar Awards were about. I still don't know!

When I first heard that title, I seriously thought it had to do with some cartoon dog winning the lottery (those wacky Disney people!). When I finally got to read what it was about, I told myself 'Just wait for the DVD.' Now, with all the attention from critics and viewers alike, I had to see what all the hype was about, and, boy, am I glad I did! It tells the story of a boy, Jamal (Patel), who goes on what is the equivalent of our Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and, with one question to go before winning big bucks, he is arrested because he is believed to be a cheat. In order to be released, he must answer as to how he knew all the answers, which, consequently, recounts his life from an early age to the present. Each stage of his life is intriguing and the actors captivate you in their emotional performances, child actors et al. This is definitely a tug at your heartstrings type movie with a good amount of laughs and 'aww, isn't that sweet?' moments. This is extraordinary film making with an above average cast and is very worthy off all the ballyhoo it has been receiving. A must-see and highly recommended! 1/26/09
