Slumdog Millionaire is a film that lightly treads so many themes that the actual subject of the film, which I found laughable, is so easily forgotten. This film is not about social injustice, poverty or love but rather the lame and tired subject of "destiny." The film uses poverty as a plot device to create sympathy for its characters. Manipulating the audience for two hours with shots of "slumdogs" living their difficult lives without ever offering any reason why these characters are living in such circumstances. In fact our main character is not even smart or talented, he doesnt even have a single characteristic that makes him special. How does our protagonist become a millionaire and escape poverty? Well it has nothing to do with the will of the main character or any other character in the film. He escapes poverty because "it was written." Seriously? That's the lesson of this film? Was this script written by the WTO? What a great and humane message to the one billion people on this planet living in extreme poverty: "You cannot escape poverty without divine intervention. Give up now."
