Late one night, wealthy New York socialite Alison Courtland (Claudette Colbert) awakens on a Boston-bound train with no memory of how she got there. Richard (Don Ameche), her architect husband, says she shot at him the night before, an accusation that doesn't quite ring true. He brings in a psychiatrist (George Coulouris), whose methods drive Alison to the brink of madness. Is she truly going insane, or is it all a ruse?
