"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" was Kerry Conran's one-man homage (the original six-minute short, included as an extra, was made on a Mac in his apartment, no less) to the sci-fi film serials of the 1930s and 40s, replete with snappy, sultry reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) in search of the ultimate scoop, cocky fighter pilot Joe Sullivan (Jude Law), the over-eager, clean-cut techno-whiz kid sidekick Dex (Giovanni Ribisi), and feisty, no-nonsense ex-flame Frankie (Angelina Jolie), commander of an airborne British squadron. I thought the actors did a wonderful job, especially when you consider that there were no sets, props, etc. to set the stage, so to speak.
The film was completely created via CGI, and takes viewers from the Art Deco lines of New York to the gardens of Shangri-la on a quest to discover why giant robots are attacking cities around the globe. This is a film of unprecedented beauty, filled to the brim with every child's thrills: dinosaurs, robots, ray guns, dirigibles, rockets, airborne battles, and more, with a dash of romance and intrigue for the grownups. It's even more amazing watching the two-part documentary Brave New World, in which we see the sound stages and blue screens, completely devoid of props, etc. except for the actors and their marks. The costumes, music, and film making lovingly recall the 1930s and 1940s, from the film titles to the sweeping orchestral themes. An experience not to be missed for fans of vintage sci-fi the gloriously cheesy sci-fi serials of decades past. 5*****STARS

Famous scientists around the world have mysteriously disappeared and "Chronicle" reporter Polly Perkins, and ace aviator Sky Captain, are both on the investigation. Risking their lives as they travel to exotic places around the world, can the fearless duo stop Dr. Totenkopf, the evil mastermind behind a plot to destroy the earth? Aided by Franky Cook, commander of an all-female amphibious squadron, and technical genius Dex, Polly and Sky Captain may be our planet's only hope
I went into this movie with mixed feelings. I am a big fan of both Jude Law and Angelina Jolie so I was hoping that this movie would do them justice. If you think 50's era comic books are cool, you will enjoy this movie. This is a pretty cool adventure movie that keeps a good pace for the most part.
There is little sexual content in this movie. A couple of crude references is really all you will see here. There is violence in this movie but none that is gory. Language is sparse.
The novelty of the comic-bookish look will wear off within the first 10 minutes, but the lightheartedness and pace will keep you interested through out the entire movie.

Sounds EXACTLY like something that would interest me, but I let the critics talk me out of watching (sorry Mr Ebert, I should have listened to YOU.) I was also put off by the comic-bookish, muted colors that were shown in the previews. BUT IT LOVED IT! It's got a cool 1940s vibe with art deco details from an even earlier time and those muted colors which gave me pause work perfectly. The story is completely ridiculous and every bit as fun as a live version of The Incredibles.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a 1930's style sci-fi adventure about a mad scientist using robots to try to take over the world. It stars Jude Law as Sky Captain, the hero, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Polly Perkins, the daring reporter covering the story and playing Law's love interest. Giovanni Ribisi and Angelina Jolie have supporting roles as well.
This movie is incredible to watch, or rather, to see. Not because it is an engrossing story or has tremendous acting (which it doesn't), but because the moving pictures are stunning to watch. I can best compare it to watching a movie through a blurred sepia digital camera filter, which gives it the old 1930's look. Add to that the old-style comic book sci-fi imagery, like giant metal robots, and you have this movie. The story is good, but you have to appreciate the dialogue for the attempt at making everyone sound like the movies from the 30's, or you'll just think it's cheesey. Despite that, Paltrow still manages to do a sub-par acting job, with hardly any emotion at all.
I think what most amazed me after seeing the movie and researching it, was that it was Kerry Conran's first writing and directing job on a major motion picture. Sky Captain is the first thing listed on his IMDB page, and not much else! After much research, I can't figure out how this movie got major Hollywood actors and into large scale distribution by Paramount. I read that it started as a short film and Paltrow signed up immediately after watching 6 minutes of it. I'm sure there is a story behind the making of this somewhere.
