Tick Tock, the tumultuous pace of this film is like clockwork, and yet it works to it's purpose. One day in the life, put into perspective, over years of loss and pain is shown through the pain and sorrow of this film.
Spectacular filmmaking like this is usually reserved to the most veteran of directors, yet Tom ford gives brilliance seen by few in his freshman attempt. A former fashion designer, Ford shows his roots with brilliant colors and styles to edge out this mid-50's period piece.
Ford's use of color motifs and filters shed light on the emotion evoked on screen. Often times the audience is given clues to a change through a musical change, or change of pace, but here a simple brighting of the lighting, or bringing down of the colors throw us into the emotion of this taboo love story of a gay man and his past, present, and future loves.
Fighting to keep grip with his life Professor Falconer played marvelously by Colin Firth most part ways with his past loves played exquisitely by Julianne Moore and Matthew Goode.
It's rare that you find something as beautiful and chilling as a single Man, and yet this first time director assisted by a compelling score, gripping editing and a tour de force from Colin Firth and the entire cast. A Single Man finds beauty and sends chills in every scene.

A sumptuous feast.....
So is there anything that Mr. Ford CAN'T turn his hand to? A stunning debut! Incredible attention to detail, pace is slow but perfectly judged. The entire movie is beautifully shot, the colouration is very clever (almost in the way of "Far From Heaven", another Julianne Moore peach) and the sound & soundtrack work brilliantly too. Firth, Moore, Hoult & Goode all offer flawless performances; I've only seen it once (SO FAR!) but didn't see anything other than cinematic perfection. A very gentle but heart-rending emotional roller-coaster, "A Single Man" is achingly sad but ultimately life-affirming. And it leaves my appetite utterly whetted for Ford's next film.

A Beautiful Letdown...
I watched this movie because I was drawn to the way Colin Firth looked on the poster, I found it interesting. I kept coming back to it and finally decided to watch it. Needless to say, the actual movie wasn't at all interesting. I would rate this movie lower than disappointing but it was just too beautiful--everything was just so. Beautiful in the way an expensive perfume commercial or a print ad in a couture fashion magazine is...you comment and move on. George, Kenny (from About A Boy), the girl from across the street in her turquoise dress, and George's house were all beautiful. But, if you comment on the beauty and move on, this wasn't much of a film. I'd recommend this movie to a photographer or a costume designer, for educational purposes that is.

Yes!
A beautiful film. Touching, textured, deeply moving and aesthetic. The lead is a gay man, but the way he relates to women and their beauty captures something wonderful. Firth is brilliant.
