All Style, No Substance
Beautiful animation pumped full of sleazy Hollywood machismo and a weak plot does not make for a good film. Mickey Rourke's role and the dark, creative animation make it worth seeing, but take it all with a grain of salt.

This B&W feel-alike of Kill Bill, is about life in a city having no soul. The story is engagingly off-beat, and perhaps is of little consequence. What makes this movie watcheable is the style... gallons and gallons of it. Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen have a blast playing more-cynical-than-thou characters stuck in situations in which they'd rather not be in.
I cant decide whether this film is a tribute to film-noir or is a brilliantly-witty satire. Totally watcheable either way.

Robert Rodriguez is all about the gore, the lovely, or the story, in that order of importance.
He can do all three very very well, but never more than one at the same time. The stories in his kid movies are good, with kids showing real toughness rather than just what passes for it in Disneyland.
Being largely about the lovely, I'm forever hoping Rodriguez will repeat whatever he did in Desperado that made Banderas, Hayek, and the gun battles so nice to look at. both El Mariachi and Once Upon a Time in Mexico short-shrifted the lovely for a little too much violence, a pretty horrible letdown for a Johnny Depp fan like me.
Though he does violence well, as the sorts of boys who like gore love his vampire movies, I don't like gore. Sin City, like the vampire movies, is 90% gore, 7% lovely, and 3% story. It's the wrong formula for me, but it seems about perfect for Dusk 'til Dawn fans.

Gritty would be the word I'd use to best sum up the way I feel towards this Frank Miller adaptation.A set of three stories unraveling themselves and using the classic film noir style as we sit up in our chairs staring at the thrills taking place upon our screens. With one of the better ensemble casts of the past decade,I can't fathom a better roller coaster ride than this black and white classic set of tales.I thoroughly enjoy this film with each viewing and would recommend it to anyone seeking a fun watch.A pitch perfect film.

I was so excited to see this movie. I couldn't wait to see how they used this filming concept with the talent of A-list actors.... yet I found myself wanting more. I suppose the best comparison I could make would be with Pulp Fiction. They both are movies where multiple storylines are shown and finally intertwined, they both have major actors in them, and they both exhibit the unique style of Quentin Tarantino.... yet Sin City, while a good movie in its own right... isn't Pulp Fiction. I guess if I was going to rate this movie based on its adaptation from a comic book... I'd give it a 5 out of 5, yet it takes more than a good translation from written to spoken word to make a good film. Some of the acting in this film made me scratch my head as I wondered rather they were intentionally acting cheesy because it was a comic book or it was simply bad acting. Six really stood out to me as exceptional, however. Rosario Dawson, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Del Toro and Mickey Rourke. Willis and Rourke are absolutely amazing. This movie is worth seeing if only for their particular stories.
I'm surprised this movie slipped under the NC-17 rating. Rampant nudity throughout the movie. I think there were at least 3 women that you see topless and countless that you see in a thong. Violence and gore is what stunned me about this movie though. You will cringe multiple times during this movie as the directors spare us of no graphic scene. From forceably ripping body parts from people, to showing multiple decapitated heads, to graphically describing cannabalism.... it just doesn't stop. There is also constant language throughout this movie, but you'll still be in such shock from the violence and gore, I doubt you'd even notice it.

Big, loud and audacious. Just as it should be.
After early hollywood misfires (see Robocop 2, 3), Frank Miller hits paydirt here (by finally partnering up with people who won't undercut him every step of the way). The original contrasty artwork is brought to lush, gorgeous life. Everything here contributes to immersing you in the environment, from the brassy score to the beautiful cinematography to the overwrought dialog—dialog which would sound ridiculous in any other setting, fits in perfectly here. The actors wallow in the material while never winking at the audience.

The film is perfectly cast and wonderfully constructed by Robert Rodriguez, Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino. This one is sure to be a cult classic!
