Sid & Nancy, 1986

While Oldmans austere Sid almost saved this movie, the rambling plot and imagery with all the subtelty of a battering ram quickly quashed any hope I had for this otherwise promising biopic. Webb does skillfully manage to chanel Edith Bunker, however, from the first nasaly Sid! to the last, at least offering a modicum of comic relief from her unintelligible take on Nancy. An attempt at harnessing the energy of chaos and drug-addled anarchy that undergirded much of the British punk movement into the powerful connection between Sid and Nancy, ends up with two somewhat less than sympathetic characters literally nagging each other to death.
