Shotgun Stories, 2007

What an incredible movie. It has a slow pace and not a lot of dialogue, but an amazing story unfolds in just one and a half hours. When their father dies, long simmering tensions erupt between two sets of half brothers. Although the moral of there being no victory in revenge has been done time and time again, Jeff Nichols creates a spellbinding atmosphere that draws you in immediately. The film does a great job of examining what it means to be a brother and to a lesser degree fatherhood. Although many of the actors aren't experienced, the understated performances match the sparseness of the dialogue and the scenery. (2/21/9)
