This film is John Cameron Mitchells message of love to the world. Yes, there is a ton of extraordinarily graphic sex, but the actual meat of the story - about several people struggling to find and make honest, human emotional connections - is the point of the film. The cast, almost all of whom are not actors, are brilliant, believable, and their characters very sympathetic.
Mitchell takes sex to a level we have not seen before; while pushing the envelope upward and outward, he simultaneously brings it back down to where it really belongs: in the pit of your stomache. Sex is at the root of what it means to be alive; connecting with others, with whom we desire to share our own life experience, is where the stories of our lives takes form. These two parallel and similar fundamental needs are beautifully, masterfully intertwined in this films story that you actually wonder if anyone has ever made a movie as deeply meaningful on the topic of human connection before.
It will hit you like a ton of bricks at first, but by the end, it will soothe you with such delicate gentleness you will forget yourself. Pure, sweet poetry, even if it is dripping wet and smelling like hot sex.

Love, love, LOVE this film. Shortbus is incredible!! Such a beautiful, joyous, realistic, bittersweet, and unique American movie. My friend and I spontaneously applauded at the end of it.
It is not merely about superficial sex; rather it is about human relationships and love in general. Sex is a metaphor here, people. Try to scratch below the surface! If the viewer is uncomfy, or does not enjoy this film, then s/he has some true hang-ups, and probably more than one relationship issue.

It's a totally cliched independent movie in some ways - damaged people in New York search for healing and connection. There are no real insights. And yet the cast is a pleasure to watch, and - as in Hedwig - there are scores of truly funny and classic minor scenes. And unlike others, I thought the sex scenes were hot. It was a nice change to see people having sex and not being punished for it.

For some viewers this movie might be offensive because of the pretty explicit sexual actions that occur from the very beginning of the movie all the way until the end. But I was just offended at how bad the movie was and could care less as to how explicit the scenes could be. A group of people are trying to figure out their lives or more specifically their sexual identity in New York City and that premise sounded like it had potential to be interesting and thought provoking. Instead the acting is not that great, the story is not very interesting, and all the viewers are left with is a low-grade, softcore porn, with a few scenes of badly acted crying.

I am far, far, FAR from sqeamish or prudish. But I couldn't get past the credit sequence here, because the graphic, explicit, sexual images being put before me were without context or authorial motivation, and hence, since I did not set out to watch...

I am far, far, FAR from sqeamish or prudish. But I couldn't get past the credit sequence here, because the graphic, explicit, sexual images being put before me were without context or authorial motivation, and hence, since I did not set out to watch pornography (although sometimes, I do set out to watch pornography...I just hadn't on this day) these images disgusted me. I have since been told by many friends that I missed a great film by taking the disc out so early, and they very well may be right. Perhaps some day I shall try again. I just wanted to warn the rest of you: there is some seriously explicit stuff right at the very beginning of this thing.
