"Martin hits all the right notes..." ---Variey. "Tender... perceptive" ---Ebert. "Funny..sweetly sad." --- NY Times. Oh please, give me a break! Do they owe Steve Martin money? I would like to ask the Times critic where specifically this movie is "funny"? Martin's role is a serious one and Jason Schwartzman's genetic mopiness is not really played for laughs. Claire Danes is certainly no laugh riot so there aren't any "funny" scenes. Next, and I'm getting worked up now, I would ask Roger Ebert what this movie is so "perceptive" about. Love? Angst? Gloves maybe? None of these characters are plumbed deeply enough to PERCEIVE anything. The movies' conflicts were so muted I honestly can't remember what they were. Everyone seems to be whispering in this movie. Maybe that's why Ebert finds it so "tender". A decaffinated Martin plays a rich guy, a dot.com rich guy I guess, who's unwilling to commit to a much younger -- actually an alarmingly much younger -- morose shopgirl played by Claire Danes. Schwartzman's loser is his competition in this love triangle, so you can pretty much guess where this one is going. Should Molly Ringwald choose Blaine or Ducky? Err..I'm sorry... should Claire Danes choose the old geezer from "The Jerk" or the big-headed doofus from "Rushmore"? Rent it to find out her punishment. I would spoil it for you- you shouldn't have to suffer through this- but who she picked escapes me at the moment. I'll concede that the movie is well shot, it has a twinkly quality, but the characters are sketchy and Martin is way too old to be mackin' on Claire Danes, know what I'm sayin? (So much for "hitting all the right notes.") This is not a good movie - when it's not boring, it's creepy - but critics are starting to award Steve Martin "Career Achievement Reviews". He wrote a much better, goofy screenplay with "LA Story". Rent that one instead, which twinkles even more, and deserved it's good notices.

A very well done, if a bit slow, adaptation of Steve Martin's own novella. Subtle, quiet and much richer than I had imagined it could be. All parts are cast very well, Claire stands out.
