Sherlock Holmes, 2009

I was never that big a fan of Sherlock Holmes so his updating to action hero doesn't really bother me. This movie reminds me of the old show "The Wild Wild West" more than a Sherlock Holmes movie. The action and stunts are visually slick, but mostly incoherent, a problem with nearly all action films these days. I wish directors would just lock their cameras down, or pull back and make fewers cuts so I could orient myself to what is happening. Instead it's fist, gun, slide, smoke, shoot, blood, whoosh, underwater, etc.. It's confusing and I just wait for it to be over to see who survives so I know who to root for. Sherlock survives, he's like a superhero here. Without him the movie wouldn't have a title right? Anyway, all in all, to boil it down, to get to brass tacks, I liked this nonsense. I was entertained by the two leads, Rachel McAdams is my kind of woman hubba-hubba, and the story wasn't half bad. Guy Ritchie throws in a few of his trademark winking camera moves and I like that kind of stuff. There's no deerstalker cap and I didn't hear Holmes say "Elementary my dear Watson" so traditionalists may be appalled. Holmes' usual logical conclusions from minor details didn't seem to make much sense to me, but they didn't when Basil Rathbone was doing them either so maybe I'm just not very smart. On the plus side Holmes definitely says "the game's afoot". That's cool, but I had to set the captions on to discern it because I could not always pick up the dialogue. Maybe I'm joining the ranks of the hearing impaired, or the accents were too thick or - and I think this is most likely - Robert Downey Jr. is just a chronic method actor mumbler. When he says "The game's afoot" it comes out as "meh babes a soot". He's a good actor but he's not much interested in talking correctly I've noticed. He mumbles through "Iron Man" too. Anyway, once I set the subtitles on I had no problem. I thought this movie was okay. Really, really okay. Really. 2.75 stars rounded up to three.

The first time I watched this movie I was very skeptical. I was concerned about Downey being able to play a role like Holmes. I was also concerned about how closely the movie would actually follow the books and the true representation of Holmes (as an addict nd depressed). However after watching the movie i have to say that it was amazing. Both Downey and Law were amazing actors who truly seemed to capture the essence of Holmes and Watson in a much better sense than most other representations. The movie itself captivates and is able to keep you riveted on your seat until the final moments. Also, as a side note for those who appreciate well made book-movie transitions, many of the lines/conversations between Holmes and Law were actually almost verbatim taken from the various stories and novel by Doyle. In concluion this is a must see for anyone.

Nie spodziewałem zawikłanej przygody intelektualnej, nie spodziewałem się głębokiej intrygi, nie spodziewałem się podwójnego dna... Ciekawa interpretacja Holmesa, świetnie zagrana, efektowna, zabawna, trzymająca w napięciu, bardzo zgrabnie nakręcona, plastyczna ze szczyptą stylu reżysera... ...zadowolony !
