The dimwit humor and zombie gore of Shaun of the Dead makes for one of the best comedies I've ever witnessed.Simon Pegg plays Shaun to a tee.Shaun is your everyday working mamma's boy with relationship troubles and a friend even more moronic than he.When zombies start to take over however it is up to Shaun to save his recently ex-girlfriend and other acquaintances as well as Ed the before mention moronic pal.To the local pub they go in hope of a safer situation to which they can relax,enjoy a pint and wait for it all to blow over but with the undead surrounding you at every turn this wouldn't seem like the most likely thing to happen.With a cleverly written screenplay and a great cast of characters to spread around,Shaun of the Dead is a fresh take on the British comedy.

On Friday, Shaun is in a rut. At 29, he's coasted through life--and still hasn't gotten very far, usually winding up at the local pub, the Winchester. His roommate Ed looks up to him--when he can take his eyes off the TV, that is. Liz is re-evaluating their relationship, particularly after Shaun fails to do something special for their anniversary on Saturday. That day, there are train delays, people fainting in the streets, TV news reporters on unexplained calamities. No, it can't be--but it is--the dead have risen. Saturday's isolated incidents mushroom into a full-on zombie assault and, once daylight breaks, it's Sunday bloody Sunday. As manners and flesh take a beating, it's time to seperate men from meat, humans from zombies, and living from undead. Shaun and Ed grab whatever is at hand to repel the attacking zombies, summoning reserves of strength they didn't know they possessed and straining muscles they forgot they had. Rounding up friends and family, they press on towards the sanctuary of the Winchester. All that stands in their way are hordes of the flesh-eating undead.
This movie is hilarious. I love silly comedies but British silly comedies have to be the cream of the crop. The laughs in this movie are frequent and incredible. The funniest thing about this movie is the calmness Shaun has when dealing with the zombies. A really really funny movie.
There is no sexual content in this movie (outside of cuss words). There is plenty of bad language in the movie. The violence and gore in Shaun of the Dead is constant and relentless. There was one point when one of the girls I was with had to look away because it was so graphic and pretty disgusting.
This movie is a welcome break from the pathetic offerings we've had in the theater as of late. Being in the same vein as Napoleon Dynamite, Shaun of the Dead will appeal to a wider audience.

Shaun of the Dead was a great change of pace in the genre of horror movies. It's obviously a satire of Dawn of the Dead, but the effects were pretty well done and there were actually elements of suspense throughout the movie. As far as the plot goes, the movie is about an almost-30 slacker, Shaun (Simon Pegg), that overcomes his slackerness to save his group of friends and mother from the flesh-eating zombies of London. His best friend and super-slacker room mate, Ed (Nick Frost), is hilarious and makes for most of the comedy in the film.
The reasons the movie got points knocked off were 1) since it's British, I couldn't understand them sometimes, and 2) the movie started actually getting serious towards the end. I know the first is unavoidable, but the second isn't. There may actually be value in making the story more serious towards the end since things start to look pretty grim, and it is also a way to captivate the viewer and hold them to the end. But, the first 3/4 of the movie isn't and that's what made it so funny! The part when they first find the zombies and are trying to figure out how to kill them is unforgettable. Other notables are the writing, the acting, and especially the camera work. The film had just the right amount of shake during the suspensful parts and worked really nice. And if you really like it, the DVD has some good extras, which I also enjoyed.

Although the comedy is smooth and well-integrated into the film, I rarely (if at all) laughed out loud, and the action and suspense is too colored by the presense of the humor to be fully effective. I think this film is a case of word of mouth getting a bit out of hand, and then fooling people (in a 'groupthink' fashion) into thinking, or at least saying, that it's as good as they've heard. Anyway, it's still a good movie, it's just not The Second Coming, like a lot of people seem to think it is.

I don't like zombie movies but I love Simon Pegg so I saw this movie. It was okay. Hot Fuzz and Run Fat Boy Run are far better and much funnier than this one but there are a few laughs and some nice moments here too.

Instant classic
After seeing this movie I realized that it’s the perfect combination of a horror movie and a comedy. I'm not a big fan of comedy movies but this one is a good parody of the zombie genre. A must have DVD.
