I thought this movie was excellent. Will Smith has always won my heart in films. I must however say that despite the movies brilliance. It tugs at your hearts strings so much that I could probably never watch it again. But, over all Excellent!

Seven Pounds (2008)
I think many critics were too hard on this film. Sure, the film is not accessible to everyone, but if you recognize it for what it is you will see that it succeeds in it's intentions.
This is the scenario where you have no reason to keep on living. Living doesn't bring any kind of joy or advantage. So how can you make your life mean something? Well if you can't use your life for yourself, then maybe you can use it to make someone else happy, maybe you can make the world a better place.
Of course this wouldn't be the reasoning an actual person person could live by. But if you look at it as the fantasy of someone who has completely given up it is spot on. It is sacrificing yourself for others, so you don't have to deal with your own problems.
I can see the beauty is this story, without idolizing the main character (I find him quite selfish in the way he handles some things). I don't see this as a story about some hero, I see this as a fantasy of a broken man looking for a way out.

This is a terrible movie. It breaks my One Rule Of Movies, which is really really rare -- that a movie can be long, pointless, or depressing, but never all three. My god, what slow, tedious, awful movie. Everything has a very 'empty' and 'hollow' feel to it, making the whole viewing experience incredibly alienating. I guess the plan was that this would be redeemed by the 'surprise twist ending.' Well guess what? I despise surprise twist endings, and think they are a cheap cop-out! Go party with M. Night Shayamalan for a while, I hear he has lots of spare time these days. Meanwhile, back in the real world where people make real movies that are actually supposed to be entertaining, a surprise twist ending in no way makes up for depressing me and boring the crap out of me for two straight hours. Execrable movie, would not recommend to anybody.

Smith plays this role with, to me at least, a lot of emotion. He's not the normal cute bubbly character that he typically plays, he's more grounded in the facts of his life and perhaps too much so. It proves to be a riveting performance and a great story to go with it. It's slow to get going and some will see what's coming midway through the movie, but it doesn't lessen the impact nonetheless. Stick with it through the middle where you may get distracted by the story that moves around, the end will pull you back in. In spite of knowing what was coming, I was a bit emotional myself at the end.

A very well written, directed and acted movie that uses a minimalistic approach to take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. There is a fine line between life and death, happiness and sorrow or love and loss, and this line is never really crossed, no matter how much you would like it to be. Seven Pounds is a movie that you simply have to experience for yourself, so that you can immerse yourself and take the ride that's offered. Be forewarned though, the ride is bittersweet, so if you do not enjoy feeling profoundly happy yet deeply saddened at the same time, then you may wish to save this movie for a time when you require that type of cleansing. Smith and Dawson have a wonderful chemistry in this movie, and that chemistry ads to the ride on many levels.
