The special effects are beautiful but overall, this piece should have been kept to the small screen.

Hardly serene
Entirely held together by a whip-crack script, and not much else, this is entertaining but not fulfilling. Also has a moral lesson on pariah society shoehorned into it, but the focus is definitely macho back-slapping fun.

Serenity review:
An east meets west Sci-fi/Western following a short-lived, but incredibly popular TV series called "Firefly", and is probably one of the most re-watchable films you might see - if you are into space cowboys that is, although so far no one's done it better than the director, Joss Whedon.
Basically the story is about a group of smugglers and thieves who live on a "boat" (small spaceship) and get into trouble with the controlling and fascistic government of the colonised worlds known as the Alliance, mainly because they harbour two fugitives, a disturbed psychic girl who knows too much, and her older brother who rescued her from a secret Alliance facility.
Five stars from me.
Symeon.

10/10Must See
A wondrous vision of the future started in the all too short run of the TV series Firefly continues in the big screen version of it, Serenity. The TV show and movie is about the crew of a star ship that is as much unlike the USS Enterprise as it can get. It's a ramshackle freighter skippered by Mal Reynolds, a man part Han Solo, part Jesse James. He was on the losing side of an interstellar civil war against the Alliance, a bureaucratic, oppressive government that seems to consists of people who believe quite fervently they know better than other people how they should live their lives. Captain Reynolds and his motley crew, including his former second in command from the war, her husband the pilot, an engineer who is as cute as she is sharp with the hyper drive, a muscle bound mercenary in a constant state of mutiny, a preacher, a courtesan, and a doctor and his troubled sister, perform legal and not so legal jobs for some quick cash. They bicker and at times come to blows. Especially due to the fact that the doctor's sister "River" played by Summer Glau , is wanted by the Alliance government for having been "enhanced" and damaged by a top secret government laboratory. (Summer Glau went on to play the female Terminator, in the series Sarah Connors Chronicles). The story is a cautionary tale about how the unlikeliest people can become heroes and how the rights of individuals to live free is basic. This is an excellent movie that can stand alone, you do not have to have seen the series (FIREFLY) to enjoy it. I give it 5 *****STARS

Enormous Central Plot Hole
I would've rated it 7 or even 8 (of 10) if the whole story hadn't been built around an enormous plot hole, which is
--- SPOILER ON ---
that 30 million people died on Miranda. Let's examin it: They used a toxin in hope for more peacful poppulation. But they haven't tested it? I mean, not once? Apparently not at all, because the chemical had 100% detrremental effect: 90% became too calm, 10% too violent. It seems they just mixed some chemicals, gave it a name, and then they immidiately used it on the whole population. One could suppose that such an advenced civilisation would have been using science for their technological advencements, therefore in chemistry too, but it looks like they (at least) just excluded chemistry from the fields of science, and made it a subject of luck. I mean, bad luck.
--- SPOILER OFF ---
Other than that, the movie had great actors, nice visuals, well written dialogues and - something which is a sore spot of mine knowing that plot hole - a misterious, very exciting and anything-could-happen-from-this-setup starting point from a plot perspective.

I thought there would be no way that a single movie could wrap up the entire fire fly series while still being entertaining. I couldn't have been more wrong. This film is was action packed and exciting from beginning to end. The actors all did their usual amazing work. One of my new favorite movies. Definitely better if you've seen the TV series, but worth watching all on it's own if you don't have the time.
