Only the dead know the end of war. How true is that, even by today?s standards? Seraphim Falls is one of the best Westerns of the modern age along side that of 2005?s The Proposition. It is a bit odd to see two Scottish actors playing in a movie set in America after the Civil War. But Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan pull off a good job of acting. This movie is one long chase scene basically and saying that does go on for a bit too long. And some of the characters in it were only meant to die. But that is the only things wrong with the movie. There is some surrealistic scenes that make the theme of redemption, salvation, and running and suffering because of one?s sins come to life. Neeson is running down Brosnan, who has spent the past few years of his life living in the western wilderness. Why is he going after him? You don?t know. Is Neeson a bad guy or is Brosnan? Or are has one become bad in his search? Or are they victims of circumstance? You don?t know, and you might have different opinions at the end of the movie. But all you can tell is that in the past their lives have intertwined in some horrific way, as they both share the same nightmare. And will the two find what they are looking for or will Satan tempt and skew them from their paths? It?s a very entertaining movie with nice sets, acting, and dialogue. Any fan of Westerns will love to see Seraphim Falls, which I give a 8/10.

I was intrigued and puzzled by this complex film. I didn't realize how truly complex it was until the ending, which left me wondering (and seems to have left a number of NF reviewers spitting into the dust, so to speak). This is a chase film from beginning to end. In the last 20 minutes the two men cross a vast desert: Brosnan on the run, Leeson chasing him down. They both stop (although at different times) at a water hole on the desert verge, where they encounter a strange Indian who speaks in riddles and bargains with them for water -- or "life", as he calls it. Having moved on, in the midst of the hardpan and close to oblivion, each man is surprised by the sudden appearance of an enigmatic woman (Angelica Huston). She describes herself as a purveyor of curatives and travels in a coach which leaves no tracks. She also strikes a bargain with each man: One gains a bullet, the other a gun. The entire sequence seems otherwordly and hallucinatory. It kept nagging at me, so I did a bit of reading and also checked the full cast credits, which revealed the names of these 2 final characters to be "Charon" and "Louise C. Fair." Thinking back over the course of the men's journey and the people they meet along the way, it struck me that the entire movie is allegorical, not just the ending, and loosely reflects the structure of Dante's Inferno. I don't recall Dante's levels of Hell off the top of my head, but I bet they match up well with the "rings" of people Brosnan and Neeson encounter. I found this to be a fascinating film. The focus is entirely on Neeson and Brosnan, and their performances don't disappoint. Quite beautiful to look at as well, even if you're uninterested in the metaphorical aspects.

Though it gets off to a solid start, this old-fashioned chase/revenge story rapidly loses steam at about the halfway mark, at which point it becomes apparent just how hollow the whole thing is. It proves to be little more than a run-of-the-mill morality tale about the futility of vengeance. In this case, neither the revenger, nor the revengee are particularly virtuous men, so it's difficult to decide which, if either, of the two we're supposed to root for, even after the rather anti-climatic motive for revenge is made clear. Still, Neeson and Brosnan give compelling enough performances to hold our interest 'til the inevitable conclusion.
