4/10Disappointing
If nothing else, Saw had an interesting premise and a strong beginning. Right off the bat, we see two men in a grimy, disgusting bathroom. They're both chained to pipes on the walls and have no idea what they're doing in the bathroom or how they got there. As they piece together the puzzle, the discover they're pawns in a game orchestrated by a madman called The Jigsaw Killer. This serial killer sets his victims up in situations where they usually end up killing themselves. It was this part of the movie's premise that I enjoyed. Rather than the standard movie killer, this guy put people in horrible situations that they had to work their way out of.
For the most part Saw worked quite well. There were a few nice twists and a couple of scenes that were genuinely creepy, even though I knew what to expect. There were a few parts of the movie that stretched my imagination a bit too far, but I'm willing to overlook those lapses considering Saw is nothing more then a horror flick.
The movie's biggest weakness was probably the acting. Most of it was about average, but Cary Elwes almost ruined it for me. Elwes' wooden acting really put a damper on the terror these victims were feeling. I just couldn't believe he was anything more then an actor making a movie, which is a shame.
I enjoyed Saw from beginning to end, but I felt like the movie started out with a bang and spent the next 2 hours trying to keep up with itself. If you enjoy horror movies, I doubt this one will disappoint. Saw had a few really good moments and the killer had some refreshingly original methods.

A young man named Adam wakes to find himself chained to a rusty pipe inside a decrepit subterranean chamber. Chained to the opposite side of the room is another bewildered captive, Dr. Lawrence Gordon. Between them is a dead man lying in a pool of blood, holding a .38 in his hand. Neither man knows why he has been abducted, but instructions left on a microcassette order Dr. Gordon to kill Adam within eight hours. If he fails to do so, then both men will die; Dr. Gordons wife, Alison, and his daughter will also be killed. Recalling a recent murder investigation by a police detective named Tapp, Dr. Gordon realizes he and Adam are the next victims of a psychopathic genius known only as Jigsaw. With only a few hours left to spare, they must unravel the elaborate puzzle of their fate in the midst of mounting terror. The killer has provided them with only a few clues and two handsaws--too weak to break their steel shackles, but strong enough to cut through flesh and bone.
The previews to this movie made it look like it would be a thinking man's thriller. The previews were correct. For some reason I had pre-catagorized Saw as a movie like The Grudge. They are nothing alike. Whereas you can easily guess the entire plot of The Grudge within the first 15 minutes, Saw will amaze you with its twists and turns. I saw alot of similarities between this movie and Se7en, but make no mistake, Saw is not a masterpiece like Se7en. It is a good movie in it's own right, but it's no Se7en
This movie is extremely violent and bloody. My girlfriend had to turn away at certain parts because of the rampent gore. This movie is not for the faint of heart or stomach.
All in all Saw is a decent movie. It desperately wants to be Se7en and fails, yet it's a fairly decent thriller with some great moments and a cool twist.

Saw is a decent psychological horror movie that held my attention from beginning to end. However the plot and execution left a bit to be desired. The plot device has been used before in more effective titles (Cube, Cube 2 and Cube Zero) and the gore level was minimal. On the plus side the acting was very good as was the cinematography and effects. Overall a decent flick that left me wanting to see where part two went and how the story continues.

Saw was a great screenplay and original movie idea, had just the right amount of gore for a horror move, but had some serious acting issues. The premise is basically that a serial killer has chained up two men in a large bathroom and tells them that in order to survive, they have to figure out a way to kill the other by a certain time. In the mean time, the police are trying to figure out who the killer is before their time is up.
I really liked this movie, but after seeing that it was shot on a tight budget in only 18 days, I appreciate it even more. The content of the movie is pretty dark, so check your stomach at the door before popping this one in your movie player of choice. I thought the writer, Leigh Whannell did a decent acting job as one of the men in the bathroom. However, Cary Elwes (who played the other man) did a relatively horrible job acting. I recognized him as Westley, my favorite swashbuckling hero from The Princess Bride, but he just didn't cut the mustard on this flick. Aside from that, this was just a good old-fashioned horror movie with a twist at the end to make room for a sequel.

Saw
While not brilliantly acted, acting is not always a horror film's strongest point. Clever lil plot, and an interesting take on the genre with no heavy reliance on gore, just sadistic devices. Michael Emerson is always a joy to watch.

what a movie... one of the best horror flicks I've seen in years... very clever and keeps you on the edge of your seat. and the ending is just tattooed in my mind... if you're a fan of the genre you'll definitely enjoy this one.
