I love this movie. It's one of those movies I can watch over and over. I think it's a very enjoyable coming of age film for viewers of all ages, not just a teen comedy. It's full of rich, smart characters that are, while not always subtle in their actions, are subtle but very effective in their delivery. I also enjoyed the soundtrack very much and thought that, although maybe a little dated as one reviewer pointed out, was very fitting.

An uneven comedy that I wanted to like but just never quite took off for me. It's a film that for some reason churns up all sorts of conflicting opinions in me. I thought Bill Murray was good in it, as he usually is, yet at the same time I felt his role was a poor fit for him and sort of a waste of his talents. And while at different times I either laughed at, pitied, or just plain hated Jason Schwartzman's character, at no time did I not want to smack him, primarily, but not exclusively, for his bizarre fashion sense. It's hard to really love a film when you can't stand the main character. As with any indie comedy, the cast is an eclectic mix of oddballs, the likes of whom you're unlikely to ever meet in real life and whose actions, more often than not, fail to ring true. This would be ok as long as the film entertains, but unfortunately, while it starts off being pretty amusing, it gradually descends into a pointless blob of unfunny indie quirkiness, especially during the cop-out ending where all the characters are brought together to have all their problems resolved at once in an unconvincing way.
