The tone of this film is quite confused. I just can't tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The subject matter here is deadly serious; the tone jumps back and forth from deadly serious to absurd quirky humor, and then to lots of places in-between. Now, I did read the book, and in places it IS absurd, but rarely funny or quirky. Now, I know the film is a totally different beast from the book, but there is something to be said for being familiar with the source material. I already knew this story going into the viewing experience and expected a much more serious film. I can accept the addition of light-heartedness, after all the subject matter is almost TOO serious. However, I fear this film went a bit too far. Augusten's experiences were at times so horrifying that we should have at least seen this on a grittier film stock; the way this movie was shot it looks like 'Herbie: Fully Loaded' whereas it should probably look a bit more like 'Mommie Dearest'. Also, as usual I found Gwyneth Paltrow to be way off-base, playing a character from a different movie. She doesn't act so much as she warbles in various incoherent notes. Alec Balddwin would be perfect here...if the film were actually a quirky dramedy. But it's not. It's a serious drama that's been dressed in quirky clothes.

I really enjoyed the book, but couldn't picture it as a movie. The film as a whole just never really went anywhere and tended to jump to different periods of his life without any real rhyme or reason.

The movie and the book are bad. This film, which unfortunately I paid to see in a theater, is unwatchable.
