Though made in Mexico, "RUDO Y CURSO" will seem very familiar to Americans -- because it's so much a "Hollywood" movie: thin characters, improbable plotting, and no surprises whatsoever. The story concerns two dirt-poor brothers who are catapulted to stardom (it only takes a few minutes of screen time) by a sports promoter who's stuck in their dead-end town and happens to catch their pick-up soccer game. Although the brothers fight all the time, they're really pure-hearted and good; it's just that the evils of stardom -- all the money, vice, fame, etc., etc. -- are corrupting the lads. Gee, do you think they'll turn out alright? But the film is quite pleasant, the promoter's character is well-written and -played, and it has some laughs and good set pieces.

The synopsis will tell you that it centers on the adventures of two country brothers trying to make it in the big city, but it's really more than the typical Mexican telenovela "rags-to-riches" parable. It works as a "sports as life" movie, it works as a dark comedy and it gives you a perfect glimpse into a specific culture in Mexico. Diego Luna and Gael Garca Bernal are both great as the two characters gracefully walk the line between comedy and drama. Their camaraderie is obvious and that's what really draws you in to their charming tale.
