I'd actually give this movie three and a half stars. It had the potential to be a stronger movie, but there are several moments that leave unanswered questions and a couple of plot holes. The dialogue is really hokey at times, too. The acting, however, is strong and plot holes aside, the story is intriguing. This is not an action movie as the cover may lead you to believe, but a look into how a handful of people all dealt with the trauma of living in a POW camp. There are a few subtle details in character relationship dynamics that keep things interesting during the stretches of time lacking plot developments. Most interesting, the movie uses food to drive home just how different one's priorities can become in extreme circumstances.

As far as the movie goes, it looked phenomenal in Blu-ray, and all of the scenery and cast were authentic. As horrible as the prison camp was, the jungles that Bale traverses are beautiful all the same. While it seemed a little long for me, most of the story is explained well, and in the end the only thing lacking was that loose ends were not tied up. I would have liked to have known what happened to all of the characters, not just the central few in this true story.

Surprisingly underwhelming dramatization of Herzog's 1998 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly. While it's a decent enough survival story, Rescue Dawn fails to capture the emotional weight of the documentary. Hearing the story of Dieter Dengler's harrowing ordeal in a Laotian prison camp from the man's own lips was somehow far more horrifying than actually seeing it reenacted by Christian Bale. One particular scene near the end of the story wasn't nearly as heart-wrenching in Dawn as it was in Little Dieter. This may have been due to Herzog's desire to pay respect to the memory of all the characters involved, which is admirable, but ultimately, I think it hurts the overall impact of the film. Dieter's character, in particular, suffers from this veneration. Bale does a fine job with the role, and it was a nice touch that the film continuously depicts Dengler's winning sense of humor and optimism throughout his internment, but by doing so, it sacrifices any feelings of anguish, fear, suspense, and conflict (in other words, drama) that a story like this certainly warrants. Sure, such feelings might have taken away from the heroic nature of the man, which this film clearly sought out to accentuate, but they also would've made him seem more real. I guess you just can't lionize and humanize a person at the same time. For failing to fully live up to its potential, I can't give it more than 3 stars.

Herzog in Hollywood (and I'm not complaining)! Writer/Director Werner Herzog continues his theme of man battling extreme diversity. 'Rescue Dawn' is a bit more palatable to the mainstream moviegoer than most of his work, but that doesn't make it an easy film to watch, or a simple movie to boil down. This is complex, wrenching, challenging and transcendant. Bale is beyond amazing, and Zahn deserves a second look as a serious actor. It is obvious that Herzog had more money for this film than he has in the past, but the filming style is still rugged, raw and immediate. However, the film ends in a truly Hollywood style that is almost shocking (if you are familiar with Herzog's past work). Herzog does not typically end films in a way that you would expect of that even satisfies you; 'Rescue Dawn', however, ends in such a formulaic, Hollywood fashion that it almost seems herzog must be making a statement with this ending. What is that statement? I don't know.

Werner Herzog is known as an eccentric and his movies aren't conventional. This one is not you're typical war movie either, it's different and unusual. Christian Bale, who lost a lot of weight for this part (not as much as he lost for the machinist but a lot)plays Dieter Dengler - a captured German American pilot and his acting is weird and over the top at times. The movie is more than two hours long and that makes you feel a bit like Dieter, Trapped in Vietnam, unable to get home from you're seat. To conclude, it's not an easy viewing but it's a damn good one.
