This movie is literally my all time FAVORITE movie now. I saw it a few months ago, and have probably watched it 100 times since then. I went out and purchased this movie recently after I watched it. If you haven't seen this movie you are missing out, BIG TIME. I would put this on a list of movies you MUST see before you die. Obviously, if you do not like somewhat disturbing movies or very dramatic movies.. this is not for you!

OMG! If ever there was an anti-drug movie, this is it. The movie left me breathless and speechless and deeply moved. I'm not sure if I loved it or hated it, but it's a movie that I won't forget.

There are different types of films. Some are meant strictly for the viewers entertainment. Darren Aronfsky's 2000 movie is by no means such a film. "Requiem for a Dream" is a wildly intense, gritty depiction of addiciton to drugs. It is not a traditional film, but, in my opinion, that adds to the film's power. I am very familiar with the drug culture and have to say this movie was deeply moving. Of course, it is not for everyone. Some will be repulsed by the film, others will find it too out of the norm, and I have heard plenty of accusations of it being a lot of flash and grief, but not all that good of a film. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I strongly recommend you watch this movie and take as much as you can from it.

This film is not intended as a cautionary tale, but more of an attempt at modern tragedy. It clings so closely to the traditional three act structure that each act gets its own seasonal title card: "Summer" "Fall" and "Winter". There's a lot that is very good about this movie, including terrific acting by the ensemble cast, and good use of location shooting. It is an overdirected film, however: not content to let the script and cast do their work, Arnofsky uses split screen effects, attaches cameras to actors, and indulges in dream sequences. This presentational style removes a great deal of the immediacy of the film. The story is flawed, too, with each of the four separate tragic endings being fairly predictable (not a spoiler: if the endings weren't tragic, it wouldn't be called a requiem). Nice extras on the DVD, including more of the Tappy Tibbons show, one of the more bizarre story elements.

Exceptional movie
Very powerful movie. Darren Aronofsky perfectly captured the essential cycle of the drugs. Starting with a blissful almost idealistic situation, and exponentially accelerating towards a certain nightmare. Leto, Connelly and Wayans all performed at their best, in a story that gives them space to do so. I would like especially to draw your attention to a performance of Ellen Burstyn which was outstanding, and at times will let you high on emotions. All linked together with a perfect music score for this emotional and realistic piece is a ten out of ten for me. Enjoy!

Realism, that's what I look for in film, does it feel real? Requiem for a Dream stands as one of the most realistic films I have ever seen. It's gritty, jarring, depressing, but a stunningly beautiful work from Darren Aronofsky, one of the great dramatic directors of this generation. Requiem doesn't take any political sides on the War on Drugs or try to shove ANY propaganda down your throat, it's not even really about drugs. It's a film about how detached we have become from society and how our lives revolve around nothing more than material objects. The acting is top notch as well with Ellen Burstyn giving one of her best performances since The Exorcist (another one of my favorite films). How she didn't win an Oscar is beyond me, but then again the fact that is film didn't even get NOMINATED for Best Picture shows how seriously we should really be taking the Oscars. A masterpiece, rent and see for yourself what real life is like.

The most intense anti-drug PSA ever. This is the kind of movie that's impossible to actually
"enjoy", so don't even try. The only fair way to grade it is on how well it gets its point across. "Requiem" accomplishes its mission quite effectively, though it doesn't really get its point across, so much as it bludgeons us senseless with it. This film is many things but subtle is not one of them. Despite the insane lengths to which the film goes to sicken its viewer over the notion of hard drug use, it does boast many admirable qualities, including a heartbreaking performance from Ellen Burstyn and a fantastic music score. Though the film is worth seeing once, it's really only recommended viewing for those who weren't entirely swayed by the old "this is your brain on drugs", eggs in a frying pan commercial.
