Chicago Tribune
It's a pretty good version of a pretty great stage phenomenon.

The New York Times
Often dramatically jumbled and musically muddled - but every time the film seemed ready to tip into awfulness, the sneer on my lips was trumped by the lump in my throat.

As was the case with "Jesus Christ Superstar," I was lucky enough to hear the soundtrack to "Rent" long before I saw the movie. I really liked much of the music (although not all of it, and I still think many of the lyrics could have used a...

The songs are here, mostly intact, and mostly indistinguishable from the Broadway CD. And indeed, Act I of the movie seemed to be nothing more than a series of mediocre music videos strung together without any transition or segue in between them....

With its release in 2005, I became giddy with excitement. Although I never had the opportunity to see it on Broadway (and now, I never will), I had listened to the musical numbers, and I've gotta tell you, I know each and every word! Set in New York...

This is a head scratcher. There are just as many grating songs in this musical as there are good ones (Most are decently sung, but aren't good songs to begin with). Worse is that the movie is imbalanced by the sheer amount of songs where there...

Eh. The musical numbers are great, of course. I just wasn't feeling...something. Something was distinctly missing. Perhaps this story is simply meant to stay on the stage? There is something about these characters breaking into song in a film that...

Hi, I am all the stuff that was a bummer about the 90s! Did you forget about AIDS, the return of heroin and the Grunge movement in fashion? Its OK, we all tried to forget but here are some songs to help you remember! Isn't it romantic to be sick?...

I'm not sure I can begin to understand how the filmmakers went so wrong with this movie. I saw the play and I loved it but this is nothing like it. This is a shell of the raw emotion that was presented 10 years ago and the weak, emotionless...

Even better than the play!
Watching the movie unfold was better than watching the Broadway play. The story penetrated even deeper upon viewing the movie because I got to see the actors faces and all the emotions they conveys. This is my favorite movie and it is simply amazing.
